A system includes a sensor network comprising at least two optical fibers coupled to a pavement. Each optical fiber includes one or more optical sensors installed a predetermined distance from one or more adjacent optical fibers. The one or more optical sensors are configured to produce a wavelength shift signal. A processor is configured to determine one or both of one or more attributes of one or more objects travelling on the pavement and a traffic condition of the pavement based on the wavelength shift signal. A transmitter is configured to transmit the one or more attributes to a predetermined location.

Traffic monitoring using optical sensors

One or more spacers for installing an optical cable are disposed in a trench that extends along an axis. The optical cable includes one or more optical sensors. Each spacer includes a base configured to rest in a bottom of the trench. A first arm extends from the base. The first arm is adjacent to a first wall of the trench. An opposing second arm extends from the base. The second arm is adjacent to an opposing second wall of the trench. The optical cable is configured to extend along the axis.

Installation of optical sensors for use in traffic monitoring

An apparatus has a cassette configured to hold optical fiber comprising one or more optical sensors. The cassette has a spool configured to one or more of extract and retract the optical fiber from the cassette. A pre-strain mechanism is configured to apply a predetermined pre-strain to the one or more optical sensors. An optical fiber installation tool is configured to mount the optical fiber comprising the one or more pre-strained optical sensors to a surface.

System for installing optical fiber

An apparatus includes a cassette configured to hold optical fiber comprising one or more optical sensors. The cassette comprises a spool configured to one or more of extract and retract the optical fiber from the cassette. A fiber monitor is coupled to the cassette. The fiber monitor is configured to monitor at least one parameter of the optical fiber as the optical fiber is extracted from the cassette.

Smart cassette for installing optical fiber

A cassette for optical fiber includes one or more optical sensors. The cassette has a spool for handling optical fiber. An adjustable shaft is disposed such that the spool is configured to rotate about the adjustable shaft. The adjustable shaft is configured to handle spools having different diameters. A spool controller is coupled to the adjustable shaft and configured to rotate the adjustable shaft to perform one or more of extract and retract the optical fiber. One or more bushings are disposed proximate the spool and are configured to prevent the optical fiber from jumping off the spool.

Formation of a multi-colored image in thermochromic material involves controlling operation of first, second, and third heat sources. The first heat source heats pixels of the thermochromic material to activate the pixels. The second and third heat sources are selectively controlled to heat different sets of pixels using neither, one, or both of the second and third heat sources.

Expanding the color gamut of thermochromic materials

A sensor system includes an optical fiber. A set of wavelength shift sensors are inscribed on the optical fiber. The set includes at least one first wavelength shift sensor configured to reflect a first wavelength band of input light as a first optical output signal. The first wavelength shift sensor has a first value of an optical characteristic that modifies intensity of the first optical output signal. At least one second wavelength shift sensor is configured to reflect a second wavelength band of input light as a second optical output signal. The second wavelength shift sensor has a second value of the optical characteristic that modifies intensity of the second optical output signal, wherein the second value is different from the first value.

System for optical sensing

A system detects and/or predicts metal ion plating events of a metal ion energy storage device. The system includes an optical sensor disposed internally within or externally on a metal ion energy storage device wherein the optical sensor has an optical output that changes in response to strain within a metal ion energy storage device. A current sensor senses current through the metal ion energy storage device. Plating detection circuitry measures a wavelength shift in the optical output of the optical sensor and estimates a state of charge (SOC) of the metal ion energy storage device based on the current. An expected wavelength shift is determined from the estimated SOC. A plating event can be detected and/or predicted based on the difference between the expected wavelength shift and the measured wavelength shift.

Detection and/or prediction of plating events in an energy storage device

A monitoring system includes optical sensors disposed on one or more fiber optic waveguides. Each optical sensor is spaced apart from other optical sensors and is disposed at a location along a route defined by a transportation structure that supports a moveable conveyance. The plurality of optical sensors are mechanically coupled to one or both of the transportation structure and the moveable conveyance. Each optical sensor provides an optical output signal responsive to vibrational emissions of one or both of the transportation structure and the conveyance. The monitoring system includes a detector unit configured to convert optical output signals from the optical sensors to electrical signals. A data acquisition controller synchronizes recordation of the electrical signals with movement of the conveyance.
