A rechargeable lithium battery includes an electrode assembly including a positive electrode including a positive current collector, a first separator on the positive electrode, a negative electrode including a negative current collector on the first separator, and a second separator on the negative electrode. The positive current collector and the negative current collector each have respective uncoated regions at two sides thereof. The first separator includes a first substrate including a polyolefin-based resin particle, and a coating layer on a side of the first substrate the coating layer being an inorganic layer or an organic layer. The second separator includes a second substrate including a polyolefin-based resin particle, and an outermost region and/or a central region of the electrode assembly includes one of the uncoated regions of the positive current collector, the first separator, one of the uncoated regions of the negative current collector and the second separator.

Lithium battery

A cap assembly for a battery and a battery incorporating the cap assembly. The cap assembly includes a plate that connects the electrodes of the bare cell of the battery. The cap assembly includes a vent member that includes a protrusion that is physically connected to the plate. Excess pressure within the bare cell results in the protrusion disconnecting from the plate thereby interrupting current. The vent further includes two circular notches, an inner notch and an outer notch. The vent further includes a cross notch that extends radially outward so as to intersect and extend beyond both the first and second notches. The notches are configured to release when the pressure within the bare cell exceeds a burst pressure.

The positive active material is produced by coating a compound with a metal alkoxide solution, an organic solution of a metal salt or an aqueous solution of a metal salt and heat-treating the coated compound. The compound is selected from the group consisting of lithiated compounds. Thereafter, the heat-treated compound is slow-cooled to 100 to 500&#xb0; C. and the cooled compound is quenched to room temperature.

A positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery is provided. The positive active material includes at least one compound selected from the group consisting of lithiated compounds, a metal oxide layer formed on a surface of the compound and metal oxide masses adhered on the metal oxide layer. The positive active material is produced by coating a compound with a metal alkoxide solution, an organic solution of a metal salt or an aqueous solution of a metal salt and heat-treating the coated compound. The compound is selected from the group consisting of lithiated compounds. Thereafter, the heat-treated compound is slow-cooled to 100 to 500&deg; C. and the cooled compound is quenched to room temperature.
