In accordance with at least selected embodiments, novel or improved porous membranes or substrates, separator membranes, separators, composites, electrochemical devices, batteries, methods of making such membranes or substrates, separators, and/or batteries, and/or methods of using such membranes or substrates, separators and/or batteries are disclosed. In accordance with at least certain embodiments, novel or improved microporous membranes, battery separator membranes, separators, energy storage devices, batteries including such separators, methods of making such membranes, separators, and/or batteries, and/or methods of using such membranes, separators and/or batteries are disclosed. In accordance with at least certain selected embodiments, a separator for a battery which has an oxidation protective and binder-free deposition layer which is stable up to 5.2 volts or more, for example, up to 7 volts, in a battery is disclosed. The deposition layer is preferably a thin, very thin or ultra-thin deposition on a polymeric microporous membrane applied via a binder-free and solvent-free deposition method. By employing such an ultra-thin deposition layer, the energy density of a battery may be increased. In accordance with at least particular embodiments, the battery separator membrane described herein is directed to a multi-layer or composite microporous membrane battery separator which may have excellent oxidation resistance and may be stable in a high voltage battery system up to 5.2 volts or more. In accordance with at least other certain selected embodiments, the present invention is directed to a separator for a battery which has a conductive deposition layer which is stable up to at least 5.2 volts or higher in a battery.

Membranes, separators, batteries, and methods

Microporous polymer membranes and related methods of fabrication are provided. An asymmetric microporous membrane embodiment includes, but is not limited to, a thermoplastic polymer substrate defining a plurality of micropores, the thermoplastic polymer including one or more of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polymethylpentene (PMP), and a combination thereof; and a polymethylpentene (PMP) polymer skin positioned on the thermoplastic polymer substrate, wherein when the thermoplastic polymer substrate includes PMP, the PMP polymer skin has a crystallinity that differs from a crystallinity of the PMP in the polymer substrate.

Asymmetric membranes and related methods

In at least one embodiment, the invention preferably relates to a hollow fiber membrane mat having hollow fiber membranes arranged parallel to one another and adjacent to one another, the membranes having a wall and a continuous lumen, wherein the hollow fiber membranes are connected to one another by means of a plurality of linear connecting elements which are arranged spaced apart from one another and parallel to one another and the membranes are kept apart from one another by the linear connecting elements and wherein the hollow fiber membranes are composed of a thermoplastic polymer and wherein the walls of the hollow fiber membranes arranged adjacent to one another are fluid-tight in at least one stripe extending parallel to the linear connecting elements, inside of which stripe the hollow fiber membranes are fluid-tight, preferably have a superheated steam shrinkage of at most 5%. Other embodiments of the invention preferably relate to a method for producing and/or using such hollow fiber membrane mats.

Hollow fiber membrane mats with fluid impermeable segments and related methods

The present invention is directed to a contactor for degrassing a liquid. The contractor includes a perforated core and a microporous membrane fabric wrapped around the core. The fabric includes a polymethyl pentene hollow fiber as a weft fiber and a warp yarn. A tube sheet secures the ends of the wound fiber and a shell encases the tube sheet and fabric. The shell has at least one opening to permit fluid flow through the shell and an end cap. In a further embodiment the invention is directed to a contactor for degrassing a liquid wherein the contactor is adapted to withstand pressures greater than 0.4 MPa and temperatures greater than 50&deg; C.

Hollow fiber membrane contactor

The present invention is to a process for blood oxygenation using a microporous fiber membrane. The use of the hollow fiber allows improvements in plasma break through results. The oxygenator includes a housing and microporous membrane cartridge. The cartridge comprises a microporous hollow fiber membrane having a wall thickness greater than 30 microns and having a bubble point of &gE;150 psig.

The present invention is directed to a microporous membrane contactor for degassing liquids at temperatures greater than (&gt;) 60.degree. C. and at pressures greater than or equal (.gtoreq.) to 40 psig. The contactor has a microporous hollow fiber membrane adapted to withstand collapse and resist appreciable pore shrinkage or pore closure when subjected to liquid temperatures greater than (&gt;) 60.degree. C. and liquid pressures greater than or equal to (.gtoreq.) 40 psig for a period of greater than or equal to (.gtoreq.) 30 days. A housing encloses the membrane.
