The present invention is directed to reducing non-fire alarms by distinguishing between smoke caused by an actual fire and non-fire smoke generated in daily life when an event suspected to be a fire occurs. The present invention provides an apparatus and method for determining whether a fire occurs using a smoke detector, which includes a light emitter for generating multiple wavelengths, a light receiver configured to detect light scattered by particles of smoke, and a fire determiner for checking whether the strength of a signal of the detected scattered light exceeds a threshold and generating an alarm, to use characteristics of multiple wavelengths in a photoelectric fire detection apparatus. The fire determiner calculates normalized values by normalizing measured values for the scattered light, and calculates a singular value from the normalized values as a criterion for determining whether the smoke is caused by a fire or a non-fire.

Fire determination method and apparatus using multiple wavelengths

The disclosure relates to a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) gas sensor which detects the concentration of gas with a simple structure and method by manufacturing an optical waveguide with a gas-permeable polymer material instead of a conventional cavity or chamber type. An optical signal travels through the optical waveguide of gas-permeable polymer by total internal reflection, and the gas naturally penetrates the optical waveguide without the use of separate inlet and outlet openings, so that the optical signal and gas particles come into contact with each other within the optical waveguide. Since the optical signal detected by a photodetector at the other end of the optical waveguide after traveling while contacting the gas particles has properties changed according to the concentration of the gas which they have contacted in the optical waveguide, it is possible to measure the concentration of a specific gas from the detected optical signal.

The surface plasmon resonance imaging apparatus includes a light irradiation unit configured to irradiate polarized light onto a metal coating film provided on one surface of a prism, a light modulator configured to spatially pattern-encode light reflected by the metal coating film and the prism, a light detector configured to detect a pattern-encoded light signal, obtained through pattern-encoding by the light modulator, as a spectral signal, a signal processor configured to spatially decode the spectral signal and analyze a decoded spectral signal to generate characteristic data of a sample provided on the metal coating film, and an output unit configured to output the characteristic data of the sample as a two-dimensional (2D) image.

Surface plasmon resonance imaging apparatus and method

Provided are an RFID reader and a method for suppressing transmission leakage signals thereof. The RFID reader includes a first loop, a second loop, and a digital signal processor. The first loop suppresses a first transmission leakage signal of an RX signal in response to a first leakage control signal. The second loop suppresses a second transmission leakage signal of the RX signal, received through the first loop, in response to a second leakage control signal. The digital signal processor generates the first leakage control signal and the second leakage control signal. The digital signal processor generates the first leakage control signal until the level of the first transmission leakage signal becomes equal to or lower than the level of a first reference transmission leakage signal.

A method and apparatus for suppressing a transmit leakage signal of a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader is provided. The apparatus includes: a first power distributor distributing a transmission signal to output a first transmission signal and a second transmission signal; a second power distributor distributing the second transmission signal to output a third transmission signal and a fourth transmission signal; a first amplitude/phase converter converting an amplitude and a phase of the first transmission signal to generate a first converted signal; a second amplitude/phase converter converting an amplitude and a phase of the third transmission signal to generate a second converted signal; a first power combiner combining the first converted signal with a first leakage signal generated in association with the fourth transmission signal; and a second power combiner combining the second converted signal with a second leakage signal generated in association with the fourth transmission signal.
