An improved method for detecting a laundry weight in a washing machine employing a sensorless BLDC motor is provided. The motor is rotated until the washer reaches a first speed. The washer then operates in a torque control mode for a predetermined amount of time, and a laundry weight is then determined based on a speed of the motor after the predetermined amount of time has elapsed. In this manner, laundry weight can be accurately determined and the laundry can be effectively washed. Additionally, since a washing machine employing this improved method for detecting does not require a hall sensor and its peripheral circuit manufacture is simplified, and thus cost may be reduced.

A skeleton type brushless motor comprises: a rotor in which a rotational shaft is pressed and fixed; a stator including a first stator core and a second stator core in which rotor receiving parts for receiving the rotor are formed, a coil winding unit coupled to the stator cores, and a coil wound on the coil winding unit; and the first and second stator cores are separated and faces each other centering around the rotational shaft of the rotor, whereby a leakage flux is reduced and maneuverability and efficiency are increased.

Disclosed is an apparatus controlling an operation of a motor and control method thereof enabling to prevent a driving force of the motor from being reduced and actuate the motor for hours stably when a washing machine is operated for hours. The present invention includes the steps of detecting a phase voltage value and a phase current value applied to the motor between forward and backward revolution sections of the motor, calculating a phase resistance value based on the detected phase voltage and current values, and controlling the operation of the motor by controlling a voltage applied to the motor in accordance with the calculated phase resistance value.
