Poroelastic materials, methods of making such materials, biosensors comprising such materials, and methods of making and using such biosensors. According to one aspect, a poroelastic material is formed by a process that includes depositing a prepolymer composition on a substrate, annealing the prepolymer composition in a pressurized steam environment at a temperature and for a duration sufficient to form a porous medium having a solid matrix formed of a polymer derived from the prepolymer composition, infiltrating the porous medium with a liquid that includes electrically conductive nanomaterials such that the electrically conductive nanomaterials are located within pores of the porous medium, and evaporating the liquid such that the electrically conductive nanomaterials remain in and/or connected through the pores of the porous medium.

Poroelastic materials, biosensors comprising poroelastic materials, and methods of making and using poroelastic materials and biosensors

An electrocatalytically active ink composition is used with an additive manufacturing process, such as 3D printing, to produce electrodes having consistent, adaptable, and high surface area structures. The electrocatalytically active ink composition includes a mixed powdered precursor and a polymer matrix. The mixed powdered precursor includes a carbon source, a dopant source, and/or a metal-containing catalyst. The material and electrochemical properties of the ink composition may facilitate 3D printing of electrochemically active electrodes for energy conversion and storage devices, and may allow fine-tuning of macro- and microstructures to develop electrodes having improved activity and efficiency.

3D-printed electrode, gas diffusion electrode (GDE) and gas diffusion layer (GDL) for fuel cell applications

Disclosed embodiments concern a membrane electrode assembly or a proton exchange membrane fuel cell comprising a phosphoric acid-doped polymeric membrane comprising a cationic functional group, such as an assembly or fuel cell having an ion exchange capacity of 0.8 to 3 mmol/gram and an operating temperature range of from 80&#xb0; C. to 220&#xb0; C. The cationic functional group can be any suitable functional group, such as ammonium, imidazolium, guanidinium, phosphazenium, sulfonium, oxonium, and phosphonium, with working embodiments typically using quaternary ammonium cationic functional groups tethered to the polymeric core. The polymeric material may be any suitable polymeric material, such as a material selected from polyaryl polymers, polyarylamides, polyimides, polystyrenes, polysulfones, polyethers, polyether sulfones, polyketones, polyetherketones, polyarylethers, polyolefins, and polynitriles. The membrane electrode assembly or a proton exchange membrane fuel cell can be used in any application now known or hereafter developed, such as a vehicle or a stationary power device.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells

The present invention relates to anionic exchange polymers including a poly(phenylene) structure. The structure can include any useful cationic moiety. Methods and uses of such structures and polymers are also described herein. In one instance, such polymers are employed to form a solid membrane.

Poly(phenylene)-based anion exchange polymers and methods thereof

Method of making a membrane electrode assembly comprising: providing a membrane comprising a perfluorinated sulfonic acid; providing a first transfer substrate; applying to a surface of the first transfer substrate a first ink, said first ink comprising an ionomer and a catalyst; applying to the first ink a suitable non-aqueous swelling agent; forming an assembly comprising: the membrane; and the first transfer substrate, wherein the surface of the first transfer substrate comprising the first ink and the non-aqueous swelling agent is disposed upon one surface of the membrane; and heating the assembly at a temperature of 150&#xb0; C. or less and at a pressure of from about 250 kPa to about 3000 kPa or less for a time suitable to allow substantially complete transfer of the first ink and the second ink to the membrane; and cooling the assembly to room temperature and removing the first transfer substrate and the second transfer substrate.
