A method of presenting computer-generated search result information can include receiving a search request from a client computer; identifying a plurality of search results responsive to the search request; ranking the plurality of search results using content in one or more web notebooks; and providing the ranked plurality of search results for presentation in the client computer. Using the content can include determining whether at least one of a title, a heading, clipped content, metadata or a user-annotation in at least one web notebook relates to the search request and, if so, increasing a ranking of at least one search result referenced by the at least one web notebook.

Presenting search result information

Computers and methods are provided for receiving a search request sent by a computer associated with a user. A set of documents comprising a plurality of documents that satisfy the search request is identified. At least some documents in the plurality of documents have previously been annotated by at least one user of a plurality of users. A response to the search request is sent. The response includes a ranked set of links to at least some of the plurality of documents that satisfy the search request. At least some of the links are to documents that have previously been annotated by at least one user of the plurality of users. The response is associated with instructions to display one or more corresponding annotations for at least some of the links to documents that have previously been annotated by at least one user of the plurality of users. The response is further associated with instructions to display a filter selector including one or more filter options to reduce the identified set of documents.

Method, system, and graphical user interface for improved search result displays via user-specified annotations

A method, system, and graphical user interface for improved web searching via user-specified annotations are disclosed. One aspect of the invention involves a graphical user interface on a computer that includes a ranked set of links responsive to a search request by a user. At least some of the links are to documents that have not previously been annotated by the user and at least some of the links are to documents that have previously been annotated by the user. The graphical user interface also includes one or more corresponding annotations previously created based on the user's input for at least some of the links to documents that have previously been annotated by the user.

Methods, systems, and graphical user interfaces for improved searching via user specified ratings are disclosed. A rating icon for a document in a group of documents is provided. A user rates the document in the group of documents by performing a selection operation on the rating icon. A user-specific rating for the document is generated based on the user rating. A search request is received from a user. A plurality of documents that satisfy the search request are identified (including a first respective document which not previously been rated by the user but is in the group of documents that included the rated document.) A response to the search request is sent. The response includes instructions to display a ranked set of links to at least some of the documents that satisfy the search request including a link to the first respective document displayed with the user-specific rating.

Searching via user-specified ratings

A computer-implemented method can include receiving, in a system that maintains web notebooks for a plurality of user accounts, a request for a web document from a client computing device; determining whether a portion of the requested web document is included in a web notebook associated with one of the plurality of user accounts; and when it is determined that the portion is included in a web notebook associated with one of the plurality of user accounts, providing for display by the client computing device a highlighted version of the web document having a visual indicator that highlights the portion. Determining whether a portion of the requested web document is included in a web notebook associated with one of the plurality of user accounts can include determining whether the portion is included in at least a threshold number of web notebooks associated with distinct user accounts.

Highlighting notebooked web content

A method, system, and graphical user interface for improved web searching via user-specified annotations are disclosed. One aspect of the invention involves a computer-implemented method in which a search engine receives a user's ratings of some, but not all, web pages associated with a group of web pages. The group of web pages is selected from the group consisting of web pages in a particular web site and web pages in a particular subunit of a web site. The search engine generates a user-specific site rating for the group of web pages based on the user's ratings for web pages in the group of web pages. The search engine uses the generated site rating for the group of web pages when responding to a search query from the user.

Method and system for generating web site ratings for a user

A method of embedding evaluations in a document is described. An identifier tag is embedded in the document in response to a first user action. The document may include a web page. The identifier tag includes a review and an identifier associated with an entity that is a subject of the review. A rating tag is embedded in the document in response to a second user action. The rating tag includes a rating value corresponding to a user-selected rating of the entity that is the subject of the review. The rating value may be selected from a set of pre-determined rating values.

A device identifies a search result document based on a search query, and searches a blog post repository to identify a blog post relevant to the search result document. The device also rejects the blog post if the blog post has insufficient length, contains outgoing links located a predetermined distance from the beginning of the blog post, has a large out-degree, was created before or after a predetermined time, or has incoming links with a low link-based score. The device further provides the blog post in connection with the search result document if the blog post was not rejected.

Systems and methods for providing refinements to queries based upon the context of a refinement indication. Refinements, for example, can be related to a previous search query and can be provided to the user based upon receipt of a refinement indication.

Contextual display of query refinements

A computer-implemented method of providing information for a web notebook is disclosed. The method can include displaying a web document in a content area of a browser window, receiving a user selection of content from the document initiated by a first user mouse click, and displaying a selection icon in the content area upon completion of the user selection, wherein the selection icon is displayed without the need for a second user mouse click.

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including medium-encoded computer program products, for searching a data set and returning search results organized in a hierarchy of categories are disclosed. A set of categories is provided for organizing a set of search results, wherein each category is associated with one or more search results. The set of search results is organized into a hierarchy of categories, the hierarchy including at least one category from the set of categories. At least a portion of the hierarchy of categories is displayed and a user request to modify the hierarchy of categories is received. The hierarchy of categories is modified in accordance with the user request.
