An optical instrument, for example a field-glass, in which the image-erecting system, the eyepiece tube and the objective tube are embedded in synthetic resin to form the housing of the instrument. The image-erecting system and the eyepiece and objective tubes and, if required, the hinge mechanism, are wholly or partially surrounded in cast resin to make a rigid core and this rigid core is partially or wholly enclosed in foamed synthetic resin.

A process of forming molded bodies is provided in which precisely formed surfaces thereof have a precise interval therebetween. Such bodies are formed in a mold in which a first set of forming dies engage an interposed plastic mass of glass or the like, whereafter at least one auxiliary forming die enters the mold to engage and form the yet plastic mass. The first set of forming dies define critical surfaces and have a fixed interval therebetween following engagement with the plastic mass. The auxiliary die defines a non-critical surface on the body to be formed in the mold and enters the mold a distance determined by the mass of the plastic body. In a modified process of manufacture, the mold has an offset portion and is movable relative to the first forming dies whereby the mold cavity in which the plastic mass is disposed is reduced in volume and the desired body is formed having critical surfaces formed by the first forming dies.

Precision molding of shaped bodies such as retro-reflectors

A reflex light reflector sheet is disclosed wherein both the front face and the rear face are provided with a plurality of juxtaposed convex lens surfaces, the rear face being covered by a mirror surface. In accordance with the invention A. the lens surfaces of said front face are aspherical; B. the respective axes of the lens surfaces on said front and rear faces coincide, and C. the focal point of the lens which is defined by each lens surface on said front face for axially incident lights is located in or in the proximity of the associated lens surface on the rear face. A method for preparing such a reflex light reflector sheet is also disclosed. A plastic sheet is treated so as to render the sheet susceptible to surface deformation. The sheet is then passed through the nip of patterning rollers which rotate synchronously in opposite direction, the patterning rollers having surface patterns which are complementary to the lens surfaces.

Reflex light reflector sheet and method for its manufacture

Jewel-studded components are formed of a planar holder or carrier made up of rings joined together by webs with the back surfaces of stones secured into the rings by soldering or by an adhesive. The thickness of the holder is only a fraction of the height of the back surface of the stones. The rings are sized to receive the shape and size of the stones so that different size stones can be fitted into the holder. The holder can be formed from a thin metal plate and the webs are flexible and deformable. Further, the holder can be provided with support surfaces, laterally adjacent the rings, on which contrasting small sized articles, such as granules or floccules, are deposited.
