Recovery of glycols from used antifreeze compositions by distillation

Alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones of the formula (I) ##STR1## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkylaryl, are prepared by converting the corresponding .alpha.-hydroxy, alkoxy or carboxy compound in the presence of an acidic catalyst. Preferred starting materials are 3-methyl-3-hydroxy-butan-2-one, 3-methyl-3-hydroxypentan-2-one and 3-pentamethylene-3-hydroxypropan-2-one, and preferred catalysts are zeolites of the pentasil type.

Preparation of alpha, beta-unsaturated ketones

Unsaturated ketones of the formula ##STR1## and saturated ketones of the formula ##STR2## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkylaryl radical which inturn may be substituted, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 or R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, together with the carbon atoms to which they are bonded, may form a cycloalkane, are prepared by a process in which a 5-methylene-1,3-dioxolanone which is substituted in the 4-position and is of the forumla ##STR3## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 have the above meanings, (a) for the preparation of an unsaturated ketone, is converted in the presence of a zeolite, of a phosphate having a zeolite structure and/or of B, Ce, Fe, Zr or Sr phosphate as catalysts and (b) for the preparation of a saturated ketone, is converted in the presence of the same catalysts which additionally carry one or more hydrogenation components.

Preparation of unsaturated and saturated ketones

Ketones of the formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 to R.sup.3 are each hydrogen and R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 are each alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 4 to 8 carbon atoms, aryl, aralkyl or alkylaryl, which each in turn may be substituted, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together with the carbon atoms to which they are bonded form a cycloalkane, are prepared by reacting ketones of the formula ##STR2## where one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.5 is hydroxyl, alkoxy or carboxyl while the remaining R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 have the abovementioned meanings, with hydrogen in the presence of acid catalysts supporting one or more hydrogenation components, zeolites of the pentasil type being particularly suitable.

Preparation of ketones

1,4-Diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane and C-substituted 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octanes of the formula (I) ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each hydrogen or alkyl or alkenyl, each of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, are prepared from a heterocyclic amine of the formula (II) ##STR2## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 have the above meanings, R.sup.3 is hydrogen, hydroxyethyl or aminoethyl and X is hydroxyl or amino, in the presence of borosilicate and/or iron silicate zeolites as catalysts. Particularly suitable catalysts are the borosilicate and iron silicate zeolites of the pentasil type.

Preparation of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octanes

In a particularly time-saving and economical process for deliming hides, a cyclic ester of sulfurous acid with an aliphatic 1,2-diol is used as the deliming agent.

Concentrated aqueous solutions of quaternization products of tertiary aminoalkyl esters or tertiary aminoalkylamides of acrylic or methacrylic acid are prepared by reaction of the corresponding esters or amides with an alkylating agent in a water-soluble ketone as solvent, by a process wherein, in order to isolate the quaternization product, an amount of water is added to the reaction mixture such that two phases form, and the lower aqueous phase, which contains the quaternization product in solution, is separated from the upper phase, which contains the ketone and residual alkylating agent.

Preparation of concentrated aqueous solutions of quaternization products

Arylacetic acids and their esters, of the formula Ar(CH.sub.2 -COOR).sub.n (where Ar=aryl, R is H or a hydrocarbon radical, and n is 1 or 2) are manufactured by carbonylation of halomethylaryl compounds Ar(CH.sub.2 C).sub.n (where X is Cl, Br or I) with carbon monoxide and a catalyst m.sup.+ �Fe(O).sub.3 NO!.sup.- (where M is an alkali metal, ammonium or one equivalent of an alkaline earth metal) in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of an inorganic base or of an alcoholate of an alcohol ROH.

Manufacture of arylacetic acids and their esters

Compounds of the formula I ##STR1## where R is a polyethylene glycol radical of 3 to 60 chain members or a polypropylene glycol radical of 3 to 60 chain members or the radical of an ethylene oxide/propylene oxide block polymer of average molecular weight from 300 to 8,500, and R' is straight-chain or branched alkyl of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or benzyl.

Conventionally limed hides are delimed for from one to six hours under conventional deliming conditions in respect of liquor length, temperature and pH of the liquor, by a process in which a cyclic carbonate of a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol of 2 to 6 carbon atoms is employed as the active agent.

Deliming hides

Dimethyl carbonate is obtained pure, from its solutions in methanol, by extractive distillation carried out with a temperature of from 60.degree. C. at the top to 250.degree. C. at the bottom of the column and employing, as the extractant, an aprotic organic liquid which is substantially inert toward dimethyl carbonate, boils at above 100.degree. C. at standard pressure, is miscible with dimethyl carbonate in all proportions and has a dielectric constant .epsilon. of from 4 to 90 and a dipole moment .mu. of from 1.5 to 5 Debye.
