Web search by a search engine among rich media objects, the search engine including a web crawler, where web search includes: maintaining, for each of a plurality of users, a reputation score; counting, by the web crawler for a particular search term, a number of tags associated with one or more rich media objects by one or more of the users, the tags including text describing the rich media objects, the text including the particular search term; calculating, for the particular search term and for each of the one or more rich media objects, in dependence upon the number of tags associated with the rich media objects and the reputation scores of the users that associated the tags with the rich media objects, a search result score; and recording the search result scores of each of the one or more rich media objects in a primary search index.

A method and apparatus is presented for maintaining a logical composite repository of Object Identifier (OID) tree structures on a server in a distributed data processing system. Each OID subtree repository has been programmed to interface with an application programming interface (API) associated with an OID abstraction layer for the logical composite repository. An OID subtree structure can be added to the logical composite repository resulting in registration with the OID abstraction layer. Any query from a requester in the distributed data processing system about an object contained in the logical composite repository associated with the server is processed by the OID abstraction layer. The query must be in a protocol, such as SNMP, LDAP, and CIM/XML, recognized by the OID abstraction layer. The repository associated with the object of the query is determined from the OID abstraction layer registry. The query is formatted to be consistent with the API associated with the OID abstraction layer and sent to the repository associated with the object. When a reply is received from the repository, it is formatted in the protocol of the original query and sent to the requester in the distributed data processing system.

A method and an apparatus for converting configuration information input in a format for a first version of a management protocol into configuration information for a second version of the management protocol is provided. In particular, a method and apparatus for converting Simple Network Management Protocol version 1/2c (SNMPv1/v2c) style community-based access configuration information into user-based access information for configuring a SNMPv3 agent is provided. The method and apparatus make use of various graphical user interfaces to allow a user to enter configuration information in a format with which the user is familiar. The method and apparatus of the present invention then maps the configuration information into a format used by the device being configured.

The method and apparatus make use of a new Relationship MIB extension having table records for object relationships in MIB extensions.

A method and system for allowing a server to be configured using a standard protocol is disclosed. The server includes a proprietary database having a plurality of classes. Each of the plurality of classes is capable of including at least one object instance. The at least one object instance is described by at least one descriptor. The proprietary database is for managing the server. The method and system include reading the proprietary database and saving a first plurality of locations of the plurality of classes and a second plurality of locations of the at least one object instance in a standard database accessible using the standard protocol. Via the standard protocol, the standard database can be used to manage the server using the proprietary database.

Method and system for managing an AIX UNIX server using an SNMP interface

A method and apparatus for detecting and locating a circuit defect. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus includes a resistance measuring device for measuring the resistance of the circuit, a heat source, and a recorder. The heat source is placed near the surface of the circuit but is not placed in physical contact with the surface. The heat source is moved about to a plurality of points in a plane parallel to and above the surface of the circuit while the resistance of the circuit is measured when the heat source is at each of the points. The recorder is functionally connected to the resistance measuring device and to the heat source, and determines and records the horizontal location of the heat source and records the resistance of the circuit at each of these locations.

Non-invasive process for circuit defect isolation using thermal expansion property of thermodynamics

A method and system for remotely controlling an appliance including a first wireless communication port is disclosed. In one aspect, the method and system provide a portable digital device for remotely controlling an appliance. The portable digital device includes a processor, a second wireless communication port coupled with the processor, and a control program for use by the processor. Upon a query provided from the second wireless communication port to the first wireless communication port, an interface residing on the appliance is provided from the appliance to the portable digital device. This allows the control program to control the appliance using the interface. In another aspect, the method and system include providing the interface residing on the appliance. The interface is capable of being uploaded to a portable digital device including a processor, a control program, and a second wireless communication port. In another aspect, the method and system include providing a command from the second wireless communication port of the portable digital device to the first wireless communication port of the appliance, executing the command using the appliance, and providing a response from the first wireless communication port of the appliance to the second wireless communication port of the portable digital device.
