In one example, image forming quality is stabilized by monitoring aging characteristics of an image forming system including its set of supplies. When an age-related triggering event occurs, a set of modified parameters are substituted for a set of standardized parameters. This substitution increases the image forming quality while sacrificing some visual acuity based on user preferences from psychometric testing.

One example discloses a method for calibrating an imager. A plurality of images of a target, each having an associated integration time, are captured at the imager. A representative digital count is determined for each of the plurality of images. Integration time is represented as a function of digital count from the respective digital counts and integration times associated with the plurality of images. A calibrated integration time is calculated from a target digital count.

A method for creating an image to be printed is provided. A first halftone pattern and a second halftone pattern for respective first and second periodic clustered dot halftone regions of the image are selected. The regions have respective frequencies and one of the frequencies is higher than the other frequency. A transition region is determined. The transition region includes a boundary between the two regions and includes additional portions of the two regions beyond the boundary. The two halftone patterns are blended with each other in the transition region based on a blending ratio of the two halftones where the blending ratio changes as a function of distance between the edges of the transition region.

A matte laser printer produces a photographic like image on media by repeatedly fusing the toners deposited thereon. In a preferred embodiment, repeated fusing is accomplished by utilizing a duplexing path in the printer. In an alternate embodiment, a processing flow direction of the media is selectively reversed after fusing to enable multiple fusing operations. In either case, toner forming the image on the media is more fully fused, thereby reducing light scatter, such that a photographic like image is produced.

A method and apparatus are presented in which gloss level is varied between individual elements printed on a single media sheet. The sheet of media is fed into a print engine with a first side of the sheet of media in position to be printed upon. A first element on the first side of the sheet of media is printed with a first gloss level finish. The sheet of media is circulated in a duplex media path so that the sheet of media is again fed into the print engine but with a second side of the sheet of media in position to be printed upon. The sheet of media is again circulated in the duplex media path so that the sheet of media is fed into the print engine with the first side of the sheet of media in position to be printed upon. A second element is printed on the first side of the sheet of media with a second gloss level finish.

Producing photographic images on a matte laser printer

A color table calibration system produces multiple color samples for each target color point in a color table. Each sample is offset from the target color within the color space by a random amount that is equal to a fixed offset plus a random interval. In the preferred implementation, the fixed offset is equal to a distance approximately equal to the color excursion caused by noise and the random interval is constrained to not exceed the fixed offset. The color table calibration system prints a set of multiple samples for each color point. The color samples are measured using conventional measuring devices and then averaged. The color table calibration system uses the sample average to derive a calibrated color table. The pseudo random supersampling and averaging for each color point reduces errors introduced by mechanical and environmental variations.
