According to examples, a lens configuration for a head-mounted display (HMD) device may include a base platform made from glass or plastic, an antenna layer deposited onto the base platform, an optical polymer film deposited onto the antenna layer, and a lens layer deposited onto the optical polymer film through a 3D printing technique. The antenna layer may include a transparent antenna embedded into or deposited onto a transparent layer. The lens layer may be 3D printed as multiple partial layers to have a shape that matches a prescription for the lens layer.

System and method for 3D-printed optical lens with in-situ antenna

A method of fabricating a lens includes dispensing a first liquid optically-transmissive material into a first mold cavity and then curing the first liquid optically-transmissive material to form a first region the lens having a first refractive index and an optical interface surface. A second liquid optically-transmissive material then dispensed into a second mold cavity over the optical interface surface while the first region of the lens is disposed within the second mold cavity. The second liquid optically-transmissive material in the second mold cavity is cured to form a second region of the lens having a second refractive index. An optical interface between the first region and the second region conforms to the optical interface surface.

Monolithic compound lens

A device is provided. The device includes a reflective polarizer configured to selectively reflect or transmit a polarized light based on a polarization of the polarized light. The device also includes a display element disposed at a first side of the reflective polarizer, and configured to output a first image light representing a virtual image. The device also includes a polarization switch disposed between the display element and the reflective polarizer, and configured to switch or maintain a polarization of the first image light. The device further includes an active dimming device disposed at a second side of the reflective polarizer, and configured to provide an adjustable transmittance of an input light.

Switchable artificial reality device

An optical assembly includes an optically transparent substrate and a first lens removably coupled with the optically transparent substrate by one or more adhesive layers. The one or more adhesive layers are positioned between the optically transparent substrate and the first lens. Also disclosed are an eye-tracker and a display device, each of which includes the optical assembly.

An optical element includes a glass substrate layer and an optical plastic layer. The optical plastic layer has a planar surface. A prescription surface may be formed in the optical plastic layer opposite the planar surface.

Hybrid plastic-glass lens

A pair of moulds for moulding an optical component is disclosed. The pair of moulds includes a first mould having a first surface, and a second mould having a second surface. The first surface includes a moulding portion for moulding a first optical surface of the optical component, and an alignment portion for alignment with the second mould. The alignment portion extends around the moulding portion. The second surface includes a moulding portion for moulding a second, opposite optical surface of the optical component, and an alignment portion for alignment with the first mould via a contact with the alignment portion of the first surface. When the moulds are brought together, they self-align. A corresponding moulding apparatus and a method may use the mould pair to manufacture various optical components.

A lens assembly includes a tube in which optical elements such as lenses or micro-lenses are individually fabricated by dispensing a volume of curable optical polymer into the tube, forming the desired shape for the optical element using one or more plungers having heads corresponding to a desired lensing curvature, applying radiant energy to the tube with the plungers in place to cure the optical polymer, and repeating as needed until the desired number of optical elements are fabricated within the lens assembly which may then be integrated as a single piece into a mobile or wearable device.

A method for manufacturing thin, multi-bend optics includes placing an optical substrate and a protective sheet into a compression mold and closing the compression mold to deform the optical substrate and to deform the protective sheet. The optical substrate can include an optical surface and the protective sheet can be disposed between the compression mold and the optical surface of the optical substrate. The compression mold can include a mold contact surface that is characterized by a surface roughness. The compression mold can be held in a closed position for a compression time period, during which, the protective sheet contacts the mold contact surface and provides a buffer layer between the mold contact surface and the optical surface thereby mitigating against transfer of the surface roughness of the mold contact surface onto the optical surface.

Method of manufacture for thin, multi-bend optics by compression molding

A method includes placing an optical substrate onto a vacuum mold having a bent contact surface characterized by a surface roughness. The method further includes bending, by an applied bending force, the optical substrate and the protective sheet to cause the protective sheet to come into contact with the bent contact surface of the vacuum mold, generating a vacuum-induced holding force to hold the protective sheet against the bent contact surface of the vacuum mold. After a holding time period, the vacuum-induced holding force is released. During molding, a protective sheet provides a buffer layer between the bent contact surface of the vacuum mold and an optical surface of the optical substrate thereby mitigating against transfer of the surface roughness of the bent contact surface onto the optical surface.

Method of manufacture for thin, multi-bend optics by vacuum molding

A curable liquid is provided to a mold having a rigid surface disposed opposite a deformable surface. The curable liquid contacts the rigid surface and the deformable surface. The deformable surface is shaped according to a surface profile by driving actuators configured to move the deformable surface. The curable liquid is cured while the deformable surface is shaped according to the surface profile.

An optical element includes a Fresnel surface including valleys between Fresnel segments. Compensation trenches disposed in the valleys are configured to accept excess of an optical layer received in the valleys during a deposition of the optical layer. The compensation trenches are filled with the optical layer.

Optical layers for fresnel surfaces

A heat management device able to be manufactured using 3-D printing and corresponding to a body of a head mounted display system having an outer wall that partially encloses a chamber. The outer wall of the heat management device comprises a plurality of channels that traverse a thickness of the outer wall, each channel shaped to allow air to flow between the interior and exterior of the chamber, while preventing light from outside the chamber from entering the chamber. In some embodiments, each channel may be shaped to comprise a first portion and a second portion connected at an acute angle, the connection between the first and second portions serving to block a direct path for light to traverse between the ends of the channel.

A housing for an optical assembly includes a base and at least one finger. The base includes a hole configured to pass light to or from an electronic component. The finger is bent at an angle with respect to the base for securing the optical assembly within the housing. The base and the finger comprise a single monolithic structure of a sheet material.

Printed circuit boards include conductive metallic paths, such as vias, traces, and pads on the printed circuit board. One or more metal additive structures are additively manufactured onto the printed circuit boards in a manner that forms a continuous weld with at least one of the conductive metallic paths. As a result, the metal additive structures are continuous with the printed circuit board and do not require separate attachment mechanisms (e.g., soldering or mechanical fastening). The metal additive structures may include shield cans, frames, antennas, or heat sinks for the printed circuit board, for example.

A Fresnel optical element includes a Fresnel surface formed in a material. The Fresnel surface includes a plurality of Fresnel feature that include an active surface and a draft surface. A light absorptive layer is selectively disposed over the draft surface of the Fresnel features. The light absorptive surface is configured to absorb a majority of visible light encountering the light absorptive layer.
