Glycopeptide antibiotic A-4696G is produced by culturing Actinoplanes missouriensis mutant strain ATCC 31681 under submerged aerobic fermentation conditions, and is recovered from the fermentation broth by resin adsorption and chromatographic purification. A-4696G inhibits the growth of bacteria pathogenic to man and animals and also enhances the growth of ruminants by increasing feed utilization.

Antibiotic A4696 factor H is isolated from the purified antibiotic complex produced by Actinoplanes missouriensis ATCC 31683 and exhibits excellent activity vs. gram-positive bacteria.

Actaplanin antibiotics

Antibiotic M43A, a new glycopeptide antibiotic of the vancomycin class, is produced by Nocardia orientalis strains NRRL 2450 and NRRL 2452. M43A has excellent antibacterial activity comparable to that of vancomycin.

Actaplanin antibiotics (A4696) designated as C.sub.2a, D.sub.1, D.sub.2, K, L, M, N, and O are obtained by the partial acidic hydrolysis of known actaplanins at about pH 1.85 for 2.5 hours at about 90.degree. C. The new actaplanins, like the known actaplanins, are glycopeptides which possess antibacterial activity and, either alone or as a mixture with other actaplanins, improve the feed efficiency in ruminants, swine and poultry.

Antibiotic A-4696 factors B.sub.1, B.sub.2, B.sub.3, C.sub.1a, C.sub.3, and E.sub.1 are isolated from antibiotic A-4696, the latter being produced by Actinoplanes missouriensis strains ATCC 31680, ATCC 31682, and ATCC 31683 under submerged aerobic conditions in a culture medium and isolated from the fermentation broth by absorption on an ion exchange resin and eluted therefrom at p.sup.H 10.5 with sodium hydroxide. The novel factors are separated by thin layer chromatography and high pressure liquid chromatography and have antimicrobial and growth promotant activity.
