A piezoelectric capacitor includes A) a composite article that has 1) a dry piezoelectric layer (dry PL); 2) a first dry electrode comprising a dry electrically-conductive layer arranged contiguously with a first opposing surface of the dry PL; and 3) a second dry electrode arranged contiguously with a second opposing surface of the dry PL. The dry electrically-conductive layer has essentially (a) an electrically-conductive material; and (b) particles having a Young's modulus that is different from the Young's modulus of the (a) electrically-conductive material by at least 10%. The capacitor also has B) electrical communication means attached to both electrodes for electrical communication of the composite article with an external electrical circuit.

Piezoelectric capacitor

An inertial piezoelectric device has: A) piezoelectric capacitor having a substrate; 2) a dry piezoelectric layer comprising a piezoelectric material; 3) a first electrode arranged contiguously with one opposing surface of the dry PL; and 4) a second electrode arranged contiguously with a second opposing surface of the first dry PL. The first dry electrically-conductive layer consists essentially of: (a) an electrically-conductive material; and (b) particles having a Young's modulus that is different from the Young's modulus of the (a) electrically-conductive material by at least 10%. The device also has B) signal processing electronics in electrical communication with the piezoelectric capacitor; C) a means for converting all or a portion of an applied force to an inertial force that is transmitted to the first dry PL; and optionally D) a proof mass that is contiguous with at least one external surface of the piezoelectric capacitor.

Inertial piezoelectric device

A composite article is designed for use in various devices and to exhibit improved piezoelectric effects. The composite article has 1) a dry piezoelectric layer (first dry PL) comprising a piezoelectric material, and 2) a dry electrically-conductive layer arranged contiguously with an opposing surface of the first dry PL. The dry electrically-conductive layer essentially has (a) an electrically-conductive material; and (b) particles having a Young's modulus that is different from the Young's modulus of the (a) electrically-conductive material by at least 10%, and which (b) particles have a d50 of at least 500 nm and up to and including 500 &#x3bc;m and a polydispersity coefficient that is less than or equal to 3. The weight ratio of the (b) particles to the (a) electrically-conductive material is at least 0.01:1 and up to and including 10:1.

Piezoelectric composite articles

A composite article has 1) a dry piezoelectric layer, and 2) a pair of non-electrically-connected co-planar patterned electrodes that are arranged contiguously with an opposing surface of the dry piezoelectric layer. Each electrode essentially has (a) an electrically-conductive material; and (b) particles having a Young's modulus that is different from the Young's modulus of the (a) electrically-conductive material by at least 10%.

Composite article with co-planar electrodes

A composite article useful in various electronic devices has 1) a dry piezoelectric layer (first dry PL) comprising a piezoelectric material, and 2) one or more dry dielectric layers arranged contiguously with opposing surfaces of the first dry PL. The dry dielectric layer has essentially: (a') a dielectric material; and (b) particles having a Young's modulus that is different from the Young's modulus of the (a&#x2032;) dielectric material by at least 10%. The (b) particles have a d50 of at least 500 nm and up to and including 500 m and a polydispersity coefficient that is less than or equal to 3, provided that the weight ratio of the (b) particles to the (a&#x2032;) dielectric material is at least 0.01:1 and up to and including 10:1.

Composite articles with dielectric layer

A composite article has 1) a dry piezoelectric layer comprising a piezoelectric material, 2) a dry dielectric layer arranged contiguously with at least one of the opposing surfaces of the dry piezoelectric layer, and 3) a pair of non-electrically-connected co-planar patterned electrodes. The dry dielectric layer has essentially (a') a dielectric material; and (b) particles having a Young's modulus that is different from the Young's modulus of the (a&#x2032;) dielectric material by at least 10%.

Piezoelectric article with dielectric layer and co-planar electrodes

An electrically-conductive composition essentially has (a) an electrically-conductive material consisting essentially of silver nanoparticles that have a d50 of less than or equal to 60 &#x3bc;m and a d90 of less than or equal to 500 &#x3bc;m; (b) particles having a Young's modulus that is different from the Young's modulus of the (a) electrically-conductive material by at least 10%, which (b) particles have a d50 of 500 nm to 300 &#x3bc;m and a polydispersity coefficient of less than or equal to 3; (c) a binder material that is non-electrically-conductive; and (d) a solvent medium in an amount of less than or equal to 90 weight %, based on the total composition weight, which solvent medium is at least 50 weight % water. The weight ratio of the (b) particles to the (a) electrically-conductive material is at least 0.01:1 and up to and including 7:1.

Silver-containing electrically-conductive compositions

An electrically-conductive composition can be used with piezoelectric materials to enhance the piezoelectric effects. This composition essentially has (a) an electrically-conductive material; (b) particles having a Young's modulus that is different from the Young's modulus of the (a) electrically-conductive material by at least 10%, and which (b) particles have a d50 of at least 500 nm and up to and including 500 &#x3bc;m and a polydispersity coefficient that is less than or equal to 3; and (c) a non-electrically-conductive binder material. The weight ratio of the (b) particles to the (a) electrically-conductive material is at least 0.01:1 and up to and including 10:1. When the composition is coated and dried on an insulating substrate, a resulting dried composition exhibits a resistivity of less than 10,000 ohm-cm.

Electrically-conductive compositions

A thin film deposition system for depositing a thin film on a moveable substrate using atmospheric pressure atomic-layer deposition includes a chamber and a moveable substrate having a levitation stabilizing structure located on the moveable substrate that defines an enclosed interior impingement area of the moveable substrate. A stationary support, located in the chamber, supports the moveable substrate. The stationary support extends beyond the enclosed interior impingement area. A pressurized-fluid source provides a fluid flow through the stationary support that impinges on the moveable substrate within the enclosed interior impingement area of the moveable substrate sufficient to levitate the moveable substrate and expose the moveable substrate to the fluid while restricting the lateral motion of the moveable substrate with the levitation stabilizing structure.

Atomic-layer deposition apparatus

An atmospheric-pressure plasma treatment system includes a plasma source including at least one electrode, a gas in a gas chamber, and an AC power supply that supplies power to the at least one electrode to form a plasma in the gas. A radial-flow surface has a jet nozzle through which the gas flows and the radial-flow surface has a surface profile that conforms to a nonplanar treatment surface of an object. The radial-flow surface is separated from the nonplanar treatment surface by a gap that is less than 2 times a diameter of the jet nozzle so that the gas flows radially outward from the nozzle and between the radial-flow surface and the nonplanar treatment surface.

Non-planar radial-flow plasma treatment system

A method for depositing a thin film on a substrate using atmospheric pressure atomic-layer deposition includes providing a chamber having an atmosphere and a stationary support located in the chamber. The moveable substrate is located in a spatial relationship with the stationary support. A pressurized compound fluid flow, including an inert fluid surrounding a reactive fluid, is provided simultaneously through the stationary support that impinges on at least a portion of the moveable substrate to fluidically levitate the moveable substrate and expose the moveable substrate to the compound fluid flow to deposit a thin film on the moveable substrate.

An apparatus for depositing a thin film on a substrate using atmospheric pressure atomic-layer deposition includes a chamber having an atmosphere and a moveable substrate. A stationary support is located in the chamber that supports the moveable substrate. A pressurized-fluid source provides a compound fluid flow including an inert fluid surrounding a reactive fluid that flows simultaneously through the stationary support and impinges on at least a portion of the moveable substrate to fluidically levitate the moveable substrate and expose the moveable substrate to the compound fluid flow to deposit a thin film on the moveable substrate.

Atomic layer deposition apparatus

A method for depositing a thin film on a moveable substrate using atmospheric pressure atomic-layer deposition provides a chamber including a stationary support, through which fluid flows, that supports a moveable substrate. A moveable substrate includes a levitation stabilizing structure on the substrate that defines an enclosed interior impingement area of the substrate. The moveable substrate is positioned proximate to the stationary support so that the stationary support extends beyond the enclosed interior impingement area and the fluid flow is directed within the enclosed interior impingement area of the moveable substrate. A fluid flow, provided from a pressurized-gas source through the stationary support, impinges on the moveable substrate surface within the enclosed interior impingement area to levitate and expose the moveable substrate to the fluid while restricting the lateral motion of the moveable substrate with the levitation stabilizing structure to deposit a thin film on the moveable substrate.

Coating substrate using bernoulli atomic-layer deposition

A method of producing a patterned inorganic thin film element includes providing a substrate having a patterned thin layer of polymeric inhibitor on the surface. The substrate and the patterned thin layer of polymeric inhibitor are exposed to a highly reactive oxygen process. An inorganic thin film layer is deposited on the substrate in areas without inhibitor using an atomic layer deposition process.
