Disclosed herein are solventborne liquid UV-curable coating compositions comprising: a radiation curable compound comprising an acrylate-terminated compound having greater than two unsaturated sites, wherein the acrylate-terminated compound comprises a reaction product of reactants comprising: an adduct of a polyisocyanate, wherein the adduct of a polyisocyanate comprises a reaction product of reactants comprising a polyisocyanate comprising greater than two isocyanate groups and a compound having groups reactive with the isocyanate groups of the polyisocyanate; and an active hydrogen-containing acrylate; and a photoinitiator composition that includes a first photoinitiator composition for providing surface cure and a second photoinitiator composition for providing through cure of the resultant coating layer. Also disclosed are related multi-component composite coatings, coated substrates, and methods for coating a substrate.

UV-curable coating compositions, multi-component composite coatings, and related coated substrates

A thermosetting composition that includes a co-reactable solid, particulate mixture of a film forming material having functional groups, a crosslinking agent having at least two functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups in the film forming material, and a monocarboxylic acid. Multi-component composite coatings, coated substrates, and related methods are also provided.

Powder coating compositions

A curable film-forming composition of 5 to 95 weight percent (based on the total resin solids weight in the composition) of a crosslinking agent; 5 to 95 weight percent ot a polymer containing functional groups reactive with the crosslinking agent; and 0.01 to 15 weight percent of at least one additive selected from a reaction product of phosporous acid and: at least one diepoxide; at least one diepoxide and at least one anhydride; at least one diepoxide and at least one anhydride, chain extended with at least one diol; at least one monoepoxide and at least one anhydride, chain extended with at least one diepoxide; and mixtures thereof. The additives in the composition prevent thermal oxidation, minimizing visual effects (i.e., yellowing). A multi-component composite coating includes a base coat and a top coat which may be derived from the above curable film-forming composition.

Curable film-forming composition exhibiting improved yellowing resistance

A thermosetting composition comprising a co-reactable solid, particulate mixture of (a) beta-hydroxyalkylamide crosslinking agent, e.g., bis(N,N-di-2-hydroxyethyl)adipamide, and (b) polycarboxylic acid functional polymer, is described. The polycarboxylic acid functional polymer is prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization and has well defined polymer chain architecture and polydispersity index of less than 2.5. The thermosetting compositions of the present invention have utility as powder coatings compositions.

Thermosetting compositions containing carboxylic acid functional polymers prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization

A block copolymer including a block of residues of a low surface tension (meth)acrylate monomer; a block of residues of a monomer free of hydroxyl group and amine group residues; and, optionally, a third block of residues of a monomer free of hydroxyl groups and amine groups. The first, second and third blocks are made of different residues from each other and the block copolymer has a polydispersity index of less than 2.5. A controlled radical polymerization method is disclosed to make the low surface tension block copolymers. The method includes the steps of sequentially adding a first monomer composition that is free of hydroxyl groups and amine groups and a second monomer composition that includes the low surface tension monomer to a suitable atom transfer radical polymerization initiator and polymerizing the monomer compositions to form a block copolymer.

Low surface tension (meth) acrylate containing block copolymer prepared by controlled radical polymerization

A thermosetting composition that includes a first reactant having functional groups; a second reactant having functional groups coreactive with the functional groups of the first reactant; and a block copolymer flow control agent. The block copolymer includes a first block made up of residues of a radically polymerizable fluoroalkyl(meth)acrylate monomer, a second block made up of residues of a second radically polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and optionally a third block made up of residues of a third radically polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The first, second and third blocks are made of different residues from each other and the block copolymer has a polydispersity index of less than 2.5. Also disclosed is a method of coating a substrate including the steps of applying the present thermosetting composition to the substrate; coalescing the thermosetting composition to form a substantially continuous film; and curing said thermosetting composition by the application of heat.

Coating compositions which contain a low surface tension (meth) acrylate containing block copolymer flow control agent

A thermosetting composition comprising a co-reactable solid, particulate mixture of (a) capped polyisocyanate crosslinking agent, e.g., a trimer of 1-isocyanato-3,3,5 -trimethyl-5-isocyanatomethylcyclohexane capped with e-caprolactam or 1H-2,5-dimethyl pyrazole, and (b) hydroxy functional polymer, is described. The hydroxy functional polymer is prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization and has well defined polymer chain architecture and polydispersity index of less than 2.5. The thermosetting compositions of the present invention have utility as powder coatings compositions.

Thermosetting compositions containing hydroxy functional polymers prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization

A multi-component composite coating composition comprising a base coat deposited from a pigmented film-forming composition and a transparent top coat applied over the base coat in which the base coat is a thermosetting composition comprising a co-reactable solid, particulate mixture of (i) an epoxy functional polymer containing at least one of the polymer chain structures -&lsqb;(M) -(G) &rsqb; or -&lsqb;(G) -(M) &rsqb; wherein M is an oxirane-free residue of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer, G is a glycidyl-functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, p and q each independently has a value of 0 to typically less than 100, and x has a value of at least to typically less than 100, the total value of p, q and x selected such that said epoxy functional polymer has a number average molecular weight of at least 250, and (ii) a co-reactant having functional groups reactive with the epoxy groups of (i). The epoxy functional polymer is prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization and has a polydispersity index of less than 2.5.

Thermosetting compositions containing epoxy functional polymers prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization

A thermosetting composition comprising a co-reactable solid, particulate mixture of (a) polycarboxylic acid functional polymer, and (b) epoxide functional crosslinking agent having at least two epoxide groups, e.g., triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC), is described. The polycarboxylic acid functional polymer is prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization and has well defined polymer chain architecture and polydispersity index of less than 2.0. The thermosetting compositions of the present invention have utility as powder coatings compositions.

Coating substrate with atom transfer radical polymerized carboxyl polymer and polyepoxide

A thermosetting composition comprising a co-reactable solid, particulate mixture of (a) capped polyisocyanate crosslinking agent, e.g., a trimer of 1-isocyanato-3,3,5-trimethyl-5-isocyanatomethylcyclohexane capped with e-caprolactam or 1H-2,5-dimethyl pyrazole, and (b) hydroxy functional polymer, is described. Curable coating compositions comprising either a liquid or particulate curable film-forming resinous material, a flow control agent which is a copolymer and optionally a carrier for the liquid resinous material. The copolymer is from at least one non-amino, non-hydroxyl and non-acid functional alkyl acrylate or methacrylate containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, and functional monomer of either (i) amino functional acrylates and methacrylates in an effective amount to give the copolymer an amine value in the range from 2 to 70, or (ii) acid functional acrylate and methacrylate in an effective amount to give the copolymer an acid value in the range of from 10 to 30. Additionally, with either functional monomer (i) or (ii) another functional comonomer (iii) can be present in the copolymer which is hydroxyalkyl acrylate and/or hydroxyalkyl methacrylate and/or caprolactone polyol monomer. Comonomer (iii) can be present in the copolymer in an effective amount to give the copolymer a hydroxyl number is in the range of about 0 to 100.

Coating of film-forming resin and functional flow control copolymer

Block copolymers containing at least two blocks are provided and comprise: (a) a first block containing residues of at least one first ethylenically unsaturated radically polymerizable monomer that is free of hydroxy functionality, e.g., 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, and a minor amount of at least one hydroxy functional ethylenically unsaturated radically polymerizable monomer, e.g., hydroxypropyl methacrylate; and (b) a second block containing residues of at least one second ethylenically unsaturated radically polymerizable monomer that is free of hydroxy functionality, e.g., iso-butyl methacrylate, and a minor amount of at least one hydroxy functional ethylenically unsaturated radically polymerizable monomer. The calculated Tg of the second monomer of the block copolymer is at least 20&deg; C. greater than the calculated Tg of the first monomer.

Block copolymers

Curable powder clear coating composition and coated substrate with multilayered coatings have as the predominant film-forming polymer in the coating at least one epoxy acrylic copolymer in an amount from 60 to 99.99 percent by weight and 10 to 40 percent by weight of a polycarboxylic acid crosslinking agent. The percentages by weight are based on solids of the curable coating composition. A single predominant film-forming epoxy acrylic copolymer has a number average molecular weight in the range of about 1000 to 5500; a calculated Tg in the range of 50 to 85&deg; C.; epoxy content in the range of 35 to 85, and a styrene content resulting from an amount of styrene monomer in the range of up to about 25 weight percent based on the weight percent of the monomers to form the copolymer. The blend of epoxy acrylic copolymer has one polymer which is the single epoxy acrylic copolymer or one having a number average molecular weight in the range of about 1000 to about 10,000, a calculated Tg in the range of about 40&deg; C. to 85&deg; C., and an epoxy content from 40 to 60 weight percent of the total weight of the monomers to prepare the epoxy acrylic copolymer. The other polymer of the blend has a number average molecular weight in the range of about 500 to about 3000, a calculated Tg in the range of about 35&deg; C. to about 125&deg; C., and an epoxy content from glycidyl functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer that is higher than that of the first epoxy functional acrylic copolymer of the blend and in the range of about 50 to about 100.
