In one embodiment, a printing device includes: a print engine configured to apply marking material to print media; a laser writer configured to expose the print media to a laser beam of sufficient energy to change the reflectivity of exposed portions of the print media; a media path along which the print engine may apply marking material to print media in a macro printing zone and along which the print media may be exposed to a beam of light emitted by the laser writer in a micro printing zone; and an electronic controller operatively connected to the print engine for selectively applying marking material to the print media and to the laser writer for selectively exposing the print media to a laser beam.

A reflector window includes a light transmission window having a center and an outer edge and an optical coating of at least first and second materials having differing refractive indices deposited on a proximate side of the light transmission window. The optical coating includes a plurality of alternating layers of the first and second materials with each layer having a thickness which increases from the center to the outer edge of the light transmission window.

A system and method are provided for maintaining optical energy density on a defined area of a medium markable by optical energy. The method includes the operation of directing a light beam from a light source to an optical system. The light beam can pass through at least one optical component in the optical system, where the optical system has astigmatic properties selected to maintain desired irradiance within the defined area of the medium through a range of working distances between the optical system and the defined area. A further operation is guiding the light beam by the optical system onto the marking area of the medium.

Device and method for maintaining optical energy density on a medium

A light filter includes exactly one partially reflective layer having a top and a bottom and a wedge-shaped profile defining a wedge direction. First and second transparent layers are disposed on the top and bottom, respectively, of the partially reflective layer, each transparent layer including at least two dielectric layers of two different materials, each dielectric layer having a wedge-shaped profile oriented in the wedge direction. A photospectrometer including a light filter with the wedge-shaped profile is also disclosed.
