Light emitting die () comprising a plurality of light emitting elements (310A, 310B), each having a pair of bond pads (NPand NP), wherein at least two diagonally opposite bond pads of adjacent light emitting elements on a die have their facing corners truncated () to enable a direct diagonal coupling of a complementary pair of diagonally opposite bond pads when the die is monted on a substrate on which an interconnection pattern is formed. By enabling diagonal as well as lateral coupling of the bond pads of multiple light emitting elements of a die, the multiple light emitting elements may be arranged in a variety of series and/or parallel configurations, thereby facilitating the use of the same die at different nominal operating voltages with a single interconnect layer on the substrate upon which the die is mounted.

A mixing optic combines a variety of features to enhance the brightness and uniformity of the light emitted from a combination of different color light emitting sources. The mixing optic may include a parabolic reflector that redirects low-angle emissions, a reflective waveguide that mixes the light spatially, and a diffuser plate that mixes the light angularly. In an embodiment, the output of the mixing optic exhibits a substantially Lambertian output pattern of a substantially uniform mix of colors, exhibiting, for example, the light output pattern of a single white light source.

Lighting arrangement

A method and system for providing a waveguide for an energy assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) transducer is described. The EAMR transducer has an air-bearing surface (ABS) that resides in proximity to a media during use and is coupled with a laser that provides energy. The EAMR transducer includes a write pole that writes to a region of the media and coil(s) that energize the write pole. The waveguide includes first and second cladding layers, a core, and assistant cores. The core is configured to direct the energy from the laser toward the ABS and has a core length. The core resides between the first and second cladding layers. A first portion of the assistant cores resides in the first cladding layer. A second portion of the assistant cores is in the second cladding layer. Each assistant core has an assistant core length less than the core length.

Energy-assisted magnetic recording head having multiple cores of different lengths

Wavelength interleaving cross-connects pass a first optical signal including a first set of optical frequencies in a first direction and a second optical signal including a second set of optical frequencies in a second direction. In one embodiment, the first optical signal, when input to a first input/output (I/O) port, is routed from the first I/O port to a third I/O port. The first optical signal, when input to a fourth I/O port, is routed from the fourth port to a second I/O port. The second optical signal, when input to the second I/O port, is routed from the second I/O port to the third I/O port. The second optical signal, when input to the fourth I/O port, is routed from the fourth I/O port to the first I/O port. Thus, by coupling an optical device (e.g., amplifier, filter) between the third port and the fourth port, the optical device can be used for bi-directional communications thereby reducing the number of devices required for a bi-directional optical network architecture.

Bi-directional cross-connect

A fiber tail assembly (FTA) with a micro-lens formed in the fiber tip is used to couple the laser light out of the package and along the fiber. The FTA is soldered at two points where metallized bands are deposited on the fiber pigtail, one at a fiber mount near the diode where it can be soldered into alignment with the laser diode, and two at the snout which forms a feed through the housing and seal for the package. Typically, the FTA is metallized along its entire length within the package. In this invention the two-metallized bands are separated by a region that is unmetallized.

Optical fiber pigtail assembly

The invention relates to optical modules for use in larger electro-optic components, such as erbium doped fiber amplifiers. One aspect of the invention relates to the optical module including input and/or output fiber tube ferrules surrounded by glass mounting sleeves secured to a metal housing using a suitable adhesive. Preferably, the optical module includes one or more optical elements, such as isolators, WDM filters and beam splitters, for effecting light traveling therethrough before entering or exiting a main housing of the electro-optic component. Another aspect of the invention relates to the electro-optic component including the main housing with gaps in the outer wall thereof for receiving the optical modules. Preferably, the optical component includes an electro-optical system including lasers, erbium doped fiber, an integrated circuit board and controller hardware. The present invention provides a fully integrated system, while eliminating the vast majority of optical splicing required in conventional electro-optical components.

Modular optical components

A method and device is disclosed for dispersion compensation of an optical signal having periodic dispersion within a multi-channels system. For example interleaved optical channels often exhibit dispersion having a characteristic that is repeated in adjacent channels. By providing a periodic device that allows for polarization dependent routing of an interleaved signal to allow for multiple passes of said signal through a multi-cavity GT etalon, having a free-spectral range that corresponds to the channel spacing, the dispersion in the interleaved signal can be lessened and practically obviated or balanced to a desired level. This invention provides a device and method to achieve that end.

Chromatic dispersion compensation device

Interleavers, based on a Michelson interferometer with a Gires-Tournois (GT) etalon in each arm, are becoming popular in the filtering of light in the fiber optics telecommunications industry. As the channel spacing becomes closer together, e.g. 50 GHz or 25 GHz, dispersion compensation becomes an important factor in the choice and design of a system. The present invention solves the problem of increased chromatic dispersion by utilizing multi-cavity Gires-Tournois (MCGT) etalons, wherein the dispersion from one MCGT is used to compensate or cancel the dispersion from the other MCGT. In an optimum design for a dual cavity GT etalon, the dispersion profile of the first MCGT will have a similar amplitude and frequency as the dispersion profile of the second MCGT, only shifted by half the period so that the positive slopes of one profile are aligned with the negative slopes of the other profile.

An optical circulator with a first, second, third, and fourth port. The second and third port are disposed to receive polarized light entering the circulator as unpolarized light from the first port. The fourth port is disposed to receive unpolarized light entering the circulator as polarized light from the second and third port. The circulator comprises a beam-splitting and -combining element for separating and combining mutually orthogonal polarizations and a non-reciprocal polarization rotator. The circulator can be used to furnish light of a desired predetermined polarization for polarization-dependent devices.

Optical circulator

Interleaver/deinterleaver apparatuses for combining/separating optical channels are described. When operating as a deinterleaver, the interleaver/deinterleaver separates an optical signal (e.g. WDM signal) into subsets of optical signals (e.g. channels). In one embodiment, deinterleaving optical signals separates an optical signal into even and odd International Telecommunications Union (ITU) channels. The interleaver/deinterleavers may include isolator components to route optical signals to and from input/output ports. A variety of reflective elements, e.g. quarter wave mirrors, reflective prisms, etalons, can be used for double passing the signals through a birefringent crystal assembly.

Optical interleavers/deinterleavers

Interleavers are a useful tool in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to separate a signal with closely spaced channels into two signals, e.g. odd and even ITU channels, each with twice the channel spacing. Alternatively, two signals with a large channel spacing can be combined into a single beam with half the channel spacing. The invention relates to an optical interferometer using rhomb prisms as resonant cavities, which, when properly designed, provide the necessary phase shifts for interleaving or de-interleaving sets of optical wavelength channels. The present invention utilizes the differential phase shift between orthogonally polarized components induced by total internal reflection (TIR) off the surfaces of the rhomb prisms. Dispersion reducing techniques are also disclosed, including multiple rhomb interleavers and multi-pass rhomb interleavers.

Rhomb interleaver

The present invention relates to bi-directional circulators based on interleaver technology, e.g. birefringent crystal interleaver technology, that enables signals containing even number ITU channels to travel in one direction through the device, while signals containing odd number ITU channels travel in the opposite direction. Open and closed three and four port devices are disclosed, as well as several useful implementations of the three port device in combination with other optical components, which result in hybrid uni-directional and bi-directional devices.

Bi-directional circulator

Described are various optical devices having at least two optical waveguides for inputting and outputting optical beams coupled thereto by a single collimating lens. Located proximate to the lens is a polarization dependent beam directing device that deflects orthogonally polarized optical beams in opposite directions by a first and second angle, respectively, when the beams are propagating in the same direction. The polarization dependent beam director compensates for an angle between a first beam input via a first of the two waveguides and a second beam input via a second of the two waveguides. The polarization dependent beam director also deflects a first beam propagating towards the waveguides in a first direction so that it is output via the first of the two waveguides and deflects a second beam propagating towards the waveguides in a second direction opposite the first so that it is output via the second of the two waveguides. Disclosed are three and four port interleavers and a four port circulator.

Beam directing device

Bi-directional wavelength interleaving optical isolators provide the ability to pass a first set of optical signals (e.g., ITU even channels) from a first port to a second port, while preventing a second set of optical signals from passing thereto. The bi-directional wavelength interleaving optical isolators also pass the second set of optical signals (e.g., ITU odd channels) from the second port to the first port, while preventing the first set of optical signals from passing thereto. Thus, the bi-directional wavelength interleaving optical isolator can provide bi-directional communications by passing a first set of signals in a first direction and a second set of signals in a second direction.
