A monitoring system for monitoring the health status of a patient and transmitting to a remote receiver a signal, based on measured physiological parameters. A sensor is incorporated in a finger ring or other article of apparel so as to monitor skin temperature, blood flow, blood constituent concentration, or pulse rate of the patient. The data are encoded for wireless transmission by mapping a numerical value associated with each datum to a pulse emitted after a delay of a specified duration following a fiducial time. Multiple ring bands and sensor elements may be employed for deriving three-dimensional dynamic characteristics of arteries and tissue of the finger.

An arterial pressure pulse is sensed and the next succeeding Korotkoff sound is sensed and the time lag between the two is measured. When the time lag between the two cannot be measured, the cuff pressure can be taken as a true measure of diastolic pressure.

The present invention relates to improved method and structure for producing an electric discharge in a laser cavity which eliminates arcing and permits electron energy to be chosen based on energy requirements for accelerating the electrons rather than energy and/or pressure requirements for supplying electrons. An auxiliary discharge is maintained to provide the electrons necessary for laser excitation. A transverse electric field is then superimposed to impart the energy required to accelerate the electrons.

Dual field excitation for a carbon dioxide laser

Alcohol concentrations present in a gaseous breath sample are monitored by measuring the magnitude of the short circuit current passing through the external circuit between the anode and cathode of a fuel cell. The anode and cathode are positioned on opposite sides of a cationic exchange membrane and an aqueous acid electrolyte between the cathode and membrane assists ion and electron transfer. Alcohol introduced at the anode is electrooxidized while oxygen supplied to the cathode is electroreduced.
