Disclosed is a urine specimen analyzing method which improves the detection of casts in a urine specimen by flowing a measurement sample containing a urine specimen through a flow cell, irradiating light on the measurement sample flowing through the flow cell, generating a signal waveform indicating a temporal change of intensity of light given off by the measurement sample, and detecting casts distinguishably from mucus threads contained in the urine specimen, based on information related to respective slope at both end sides of the signal waveform corresponding to each formed element contained in the urine specimen.

The present invention provides a blood analyzer. The blood analyzer comprises a flow cell in which a first measurement sample flows, a light source for irradiating the first measurement sample flowing in the flow cell, a PIN photodiode for detecting a side scattered light from the first measurement sample irradiated by the light source, and an avalanche photodiode for detecting a side fluorescence light from the first measurement sample irradiated by the light source. The blood analyzer also comprises a signal processing part which has a low pass filter for reducing high frequency noise included in the side fluorescent light signal. A cut-off frequency of the low pass filter is set so that the blood analyzer can classify white blood cells in the first measurement sample into at least four groups comprising neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and eosinophils, based solely on the side scattered light signal and the side fluorescent light signal.

A sample analyzer is provided that is capable of eliciting sufficient performance of an avalanche photodiode, and performing high-precision analysis of the sample. The sample analyzer is provided with a WBC detection section that uses the avalanche photodiode as a photoreceptor element. The WBC detection section is provided with a flow cell, semiconductor light source, side collective lens, dichroic mirror, and avalanche photodiode. The side collective lens is a lens with a high NA (numeric aperture), and an aspheric lens with a small aberration. The sample analyzer prepares a scattergram using side fluorescent light signals and side scattered light signals to classify white blood cells into five categories.

Particle measurement apparatus and method

An apparatus for detecting corpuscles such as blood cells. The apparatus has an aperture and a constant-current source that supplies an electrical current to the aperture for detection of corpuscles. When corpuscles to be investigated pass through the aperture, the electrical impedance changes, producing a signal (herein referred to as the corpuscle signal). The apparatus further includes a pseudo signal-generating means for producing a pseudo signal in the form of pulses. The pseudo signal has a peak value proportional to the amplitude of the input current and is equivalent to the corpuscle signal detected when the corpuscles pass through the aperture. A signal selector means is disposed among the aperture, the constant-current source, and the pseudo signal-generating means. The signal selector means assumes either a first state or a second state. In the first state, the current from the power supply is supplied to the pseudo signal-generating means, and the pseudo signal produced by the pseudo signal-generating means is supplied to the aperture. In the second state, the current from the power supply is supplied to the aperture.
