A self-cleaning web-threading apparatus for a web-fed printing press includes guide rails, a web leader, driver and a detergent supply. The guide rails define a web guideway along which a web is to be threaded through a printing press. The web leader travels along the web guideway in sliding engagement with the guide rails for threading the web through the press. The web leader is fabricated at least partially from a detergent-absorbent material for sliding contact with the guide rails. The driver drives the web leader along the web guideway. The detergent supply is disposed in a selected position on the web guideway for supplying a detergent to the web leader traveling along the web guideway to impregnate it with the detergent. The guide rails are cleaned by the detergent-impregnated web leader as it travels in sliding contact therewith.

Self-cleaning web-threading apparatus for a web-fed printing press

A disklike rotary switch is installed at a junction of four web-threading guideways in a rotary printing press, for use in switching a web, being threaded through the press preparatory to printing, from one to another of the guideways. The web-threading guideways are of radial arrangement, constantly spaced 45 degrees from one another, about the axis of rotation of the switch. The switch has defined therein two orthogonally intersecting, rectilinear switching guideways, each for intercommunicating one pair of web-threading guideways opposed to each other across the switch, and two arcuate switching guideways each for intercommunicating two of the web-threading guideways that are adjacent each other circumferentially of the switch. A single fluid-actuated cylinder is used for driving the switch between two preassigned angular positions. A tandem connection of two such cylinders is used in an alternative embodiment for driving the switch between three positions.

Multiway switching device for use in threading webs through a rotary printing press

An automatic paper-threading device for use in an angle bar section of a rotary press which includes a paper web supply unit, a press unit, an angle bar section, and a folding unit and which has a paper-threading path for paper web formed between the paper web supply unit and the folding unit. The angle bar section is disposed in the paper-threading path and includes a first bar and a second bar disposed in parallel and separated by an appropriate distance. The automatic paper-threading device includes a paper leader guide and a tensioner. The paper leader guide includes a drive unit for moving along the paper-threading path a paper leader affixed to a leading end portion of paper web. The tensioner is provided in the angle bar section and includes a paper guide which is disposed between the first bar and the second bar to extend the widthwise direction of the paper web. The paper guide is moved between a standby position where the paper guide does not interfere with the paper-threading path and a projection position where the paper guide projects across the paper-threading path to thereby urge the paper web outward.

Automatic paper-threading device for use in angle bar section

A paper feeding apparatus is provided for use in a web threading apparatus of a rotary press for threading a web along a web threading path by drawing a leading end of the web using a web threading member movably provided on an outside portion of the web threading path and along the web threading path. The paper feeding apparatus includes a pair of an upstream roller and a downstream roller extending substantially parallel to a width direction of the web in the web threading path, and a driving mechanism for driving the upstream and downstream rollers in a feeding direction of the web and for ensuring that a peripheral speed of the downstream roller is at least equal to a moving speed of the web threading member. The upstream and downstream rollers are offset on an upstream side and a downstream side in a direction of the web threading path so that the web is not nipped by both the upstream roller and the downstream roller. A peripheral surface of one of the upstream and downstream rollers contacts a first side surface of the web and a peripheral surface of the other of the upstream and downstream rollers contacts a second side surface of the web, in a manner such that slipping between the rollers and the web is increased in response to a lowering of a tension on the web and such that slipping between the rollers and the web is decreased in response to an increase of the tension on the web. In addition, the upstream roller is displaceable in accordance with a variation of the tension on the web so as to constantly apply a force against the tension.

A branching apparatus is provided in a paper-web threading apparatus of a rotary press in which, in order to thread a paper web into a threading path of the rotary press, threading guides are disposed at side portions of the threading path to extend therealong, thereby forming a threading-member traveling path through which a threading member can travel. The branching apparatus includes a branch threading guide in which a plurality of downstream threading-member traveling paths are formed such that they communicate with a single upstream threading-member traveling path via respective branching points, shifters disposed in the vicinity of the branch threading guide and having guide edges which operates at the branching points of the branch threading guide so as to guide the threading member to a selected downstream threading-member traveling path while closing the unselected downstream threading-member traveling path, and a drive for moving the shifter so as to selectively open and close the downstream threading-member traveling paths. It is possible to allow smooth traveling of the threading member. In addition, the branching apparatus can be simplified and be made compact.

A paper web guiding member includes a belt-shaped member having a guided end engaging portion adapted to engage with or secure the guided end of the paper web. In an inking mechanism in a rotary press a doctor blade is provided to prevent the mixing into the ink of bubbles which cause the scattering of an ink mist upon bursting of the bubbles. The doctor blade can swing along the circumferential surface of eccentric sleeves supporting both ends of a fountain roll. A free end portion of the doctor blade contacts with a position just progressed in the rotative direction on that portion of the circumferential surface of a mesh roll to which ink is transferred from the fountain roll. A scraped ink returning plate is provided close to and along the circumferential surface of the fountain roll providing a streamline flow of the scraped ink without turbulent flow. The free end portion of the doctor blade can be displaced for cleaning and replacement.
