The present invention is directed to compounds and adhesives finding special utility in dental applications. Compounds of formulae: are of special interest, wherein: 

Polymerizable phosphonic acid derivative and adhesive composition comprising the same

A compound that exhibits excellent color tone stability and physical properties as well as excellent photopolymerization activity over a wide region from near-ultraviolet to visible region, permitting relaxed operation under ambient light, so that wide application can be found in the dental field and photopolymerization industry; and a relevant photopolymerization initiator and hardenable composition. In particular, there is provided a novel camphorquinone derivative having an acylphosphine oxide group [&#x2014;(C&#x2550;O)&#x2014;(P&#x2550;O)&#x3c;] in each molecule. Further, there is provided a photopolymerization initiator comprising the camphorquinone derivative having an acrylphosphine oxide group [&#x2014;(C&#x2550;O)&#x2014;(P&#x2550;O)&#x3c;] in each molecule as an indispensable component, loaded with at least one member selected from among a polymerization accelerator, a photoacid generator, a photosensitizer and a (bis)acylphosphine oxide, and provided a hardenable composition comprising the initiator. The thus provided photopolymerization initiator and hardenable composition exhibit excellent color tone stability and physical properties as well as excellent photopolymeritzaion activity over an ultraviolet and visible wide wavelength region, permitting relaxed operation under ambient light, so that wide application can be found in the dental field and photopolymerization industry.

There is provided a fluoride-ion sustained release pre-formed glass ionomer filler comprising a powdery reaction product of polyalkenoic acid with a fluorine-containing glass, and a method of producing the same. There is also provided a dental composition containing the filler. The fluoride-ion sustained release pre-formed glass ionomer filler is long capable of releasing fluoride ions in the presence of water without involving disintegration. The dental composition of the invention is useful particularly for prevention of dental caries and like trouble.

A novel compound useful as a precious metal adhesive component is provided which can exhibit high and durable adhesivity with precious metals, such as gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, and alloys thereof. The compound is a (meth)acrylic ester derivative having a disulfide cyclic group which is represented by the general formula �I!: ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, and R.sub.2 represents a C1-C14 alkylene group which may have a substituent.

The present invention provides a primer composition comprising (i) 0.5-90% by weight of water, (ii) 5-90% by weight of a polymerizable compound having hydroxyl group, (iii) 0.1-90% by weight of a polymerizable compound having acidic group, and (iv) 0.01-30% by weight of a curing agent. When dental adhesive restorative materials such as dental resin cements, composite resins, PMMA resins and the like are made to adhere directly or through bonding agents to substrates such as vital hard tissues, especially an enamel or a dentin of natural teeth, glass ionomer cements and the like, the primer composition is able to impart a strong and durable adhesive property between the both without treating said substrates with an acid and the like.
