An application server, a data server, and a printer are connected to one another via a communication network. The application server executes application software. Then, the application server generates print data for printing an interim result or final result of processing performed by the application software, and sends the print data to the data server. The data server provides the supplied print data to the printer. The printer performs printing in accordance with the provided print data.

An electronic blackboard displays information and optically detects input information on a display/writing surface by determining the corresponding coordinates. To determine the input coordinates, a predetermined number of pairs of light emitting elements and light detecting elements are placed in parallel for each axis near the edges. A control unit is connected to the light emitting elements for sequentially activating these light emitting elements and for controlling the light detecting elements to detect the light in an overlapping manner. In the coordinate-position inputting/detecting device, the light receiving/emitting devices emit light beams spreading in a fan shape and travelling along an entry area. The coordinates of a position of a pointing body such as a user's fingertip or a pen inserted in the entry area is identified using the distribution of intensity detected by the light receiving/emitting devices.

An electronic blackboard system with a PDP for displaying characters and images. A touch input device with a touch panel surface is provided on the front surface of the PDP. A printer outputs image data onto recording paper. A computer provides control over displays on the PDP as well over the printing operations of the printer according to the input from the touch input device. A frame unit has a board section for holding a display surface and a write-in surface of the electronic blackboard at a specified height. A printer accommodating section accommodates the printer and a computer accommodating section accommodates the computer therein.
