A solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization and a catalyst are disclosed that exhibit high catalytic activity when used for gas-phase polymerization, suppress rapid reactions in the initial stage of polymerization relative to the polymerization activity, and can produce a propylene polymer in high yield while maintaining high stereoregularity. The solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization includes magnesium, titanium, a halogen, and an internal electron donor, the solid catalyst component including an asymmetrical phthalic diester represented by the following general formula (1) in a molar ratio of 0.2 to 0.8 relative to the total content of the internal electron donor.R(CH)(COOR)(COOR)&#x2003;&#x2003;(1)wherein Ris an alkyl group or the like, Ris a linear or branched alkyl group having 2 to 6 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group, Ris a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, the number of carbon atoms included in Rbeing smaller than the number of carbon atoms included in R, and k is an integer from 0 to 4 that indicates the number of substituents R.

An olefin polymerization catalyst comprising: (A1) a solid catalyst component prepared by contacting (a1) a dialkoxymagnesium, (b1) a tetravalent titanium halide, (c1) an electron compound, and (d1) a polysiloxane, (B) an organoaluminum compound of the formula RAlQ, and (C) an aminosilane compound of the formula (RRN)Si(OR)has a high activity to hydrogen as compared with conventional catalysts and maintains the capability of producing polymers with a high stereoregularity at a high yield.

A solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization characterized by being formed from (a) a magnesium compound, (b) titanium tetrachloride, (c) a phthalic diester and a derivative thereof, and either (d) a hydroxylated hydrocarbon compound (phenol, etc.) represented by a specific formula or (d) a mercapto-containing hydrocarbon compound (thiophenol, etc.) represented by a specific formula. With a catalyst obtained from this solid catalyst component, an olefin polymer can be obtained in extremely high yield. In particular, a propylene polymer which retains high stereoregularity can be obtained in extremely high yield.

Particularly, propylene polymers can be obtain in very high yields while retaining high stereoregularity.
