A method for a communication device includes determining whether a first radio frequency (RF) signal at a level of at least a first predetermined field threshold is detected. The method also includes generating a second RF signal at a level of at least a second predetermined field threshold greater than the first predetermined field threshold, when the communication device receives an instruction to generate the second RF signal and the determining determines that the first RF signal at the level of at least the first predetermined field threshold is not detected. The method further includes receiving a load modulated RF signal in response to the second RF signal.

A communication system and communication method enable various types of near field communication. NFC communication apparatuses have two features in that each can perform communication in two communication modes and that each can perform data transmission at a plurality of transfer rates. The two communication modes consist of a passive mode and an active mode. In the passive mode, between the NFC communication apparatuses, for example, a first NFC communication apparatus transmits data to a second NFC communication apparatus by modulating electromagnetic waves generated by itself, while the second NFC communication apparatus transmits data to the first NFC communication apparatus by performing load modulation on the electromagnetic waves generated by the first NFC communication apparatus. Alternatively, in the active mode, either of the NFC communication apparatuses transmits data by modulating electromagnetic waves generated by itself. The present innovation can be applied to, for example, an IC card system, etc.

An RF (radio frequency) signal is generated at a first communication device and is modulated. A second RF signal provided to the first communication device from the second communication device is demodulated. The second RF signal is detected. The generating is actuated to initiate an active or a passive mode communication, when the detecting does not detect the second RF signal at a level of a first threshold or more, the active mode including a transmission of modulated data at the first communication device and the second communication device, the passive mode providing load modulated communication from the second communication device to the first communication device. When the first communication device receives an indication to start a communication of the active mode from the second communication device, the demodulating receives data at a level of a second threshold or higher, the second threshold being higher than the first threshold.

A communication system includes a wired communication device and a communication device that can communicate with a wireless communication device and the wired communication device. The communication device includes a clock output unit and a modulator. The wired communication device includes a clock extracting unit, a signal extracting unit, and a processing unit. The first communication device includes a setter configured to set a first indication mode and a corresponding second indication mode, a sender configured to send data representing the second indication mode to the second communication device when communication has been established with the second communication device, and a first indicator configured to indicate the establishment of communication in the first indication mode, correspondingly to indication in the second indication mode by the second communication device. The second communication device includes a receiver configured to receive the data representing the second indication mode, and a second indicator configured to indicate the establishment of communication in the second indication mode, correspondingly to the indication in the first indication mode by the first communication device.
