UEs can determine a codec to use for a call based on a codec priority list. A UE can dynamically determine a priority order for the codec priority list based on call conditions experienced by the UE, such that a low bitrate codec may be indicated as the highest priority on the codec priority list if the UE is experiencing relatively poor call conditions. The UE that receives the codec priority list can select a codec from the codec priority list to use during the call. The UE that receives the codec priority list may select one of the listed codecs based on call conditions experienced by that UE, such that the UE may select a low bitrate codec due to relatively poor call conditions being experienced by that UE even if the low bitrate codec is not identified on the codec priority list as the highest-priority codec.

Systems and methods are provided for synchronization signal block (SSB) periodicity optimization in a wireless network. A method includes measuring a network load and comparing the measured network load to a first predetermined threshold. The method further includes automatically adjusting an SSB periodicity when the network load meets the first predetermined threshold.

A user equipment (UE) can be a mobile terminating (MT) device that may receive data from another UE or other network element via a telecommunication network. When a small data payload is available for an MT UE, a base station of the telecommunication network can send a paging message to the UE that includes a Mobile Terminating Small Data Transmission (MT-SDT) paging cause. Based on the MT-SDT paging cause in the paging message, the UE can use Small Data Transmission (SDT) procedures to respond to the paging message. The SDT procedures can allow the UE to obtain the small data payload while the UE remains in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) Inactive state.

Techniques for intelligently setting a query timer value are described herein. For example, when a user equipment (UE) is connected to a visited public land mobile network (VPLMN) (e.g., when the UE is roaming), the UE can determine a distance metric based on the location of the UE's home public land mobile network (HPLMN) and the VPLMN and/or based on other factors to determine a query timer value. In some examples, the UE can input data to a machine learned model to determine the query timer value. The UE can initiate a querying application based on the query timer value to search for the HPLMN or more preferred VPLMNs. Determining a query timer value in this manner can minimize such querying application and can reduce battery usage for a UE.

Intelligent querying for network coverage

The system determines that an application running user equipment (UE) is requesting a throughput intensive communication over a network. The throughput intensive communication can require a predetermined downlink and uplink throughput. The system sends a first indication to the network, specifying to a base station of the network that the UE is requesting the throughput intensive communication. The base station determines whether it can provide the downlink throughput and the uplink throughput to the UE. Upon determining that the base station cannot provide the downlink or the uplink throughput to the UE, the base station sends a first message to the UE, indicating that the throughput intensive communication is of low quality. Upon receiving the first message, the UE waits for a predetermined criterion to be satisfied before attempting to engage in the throughput intensive communication, thereby reducing network traffic by eschewing sending repeated requests for the throughput intensive communication.

A wireless communication network serves random data integrity protection to a User Equipment (UE). A network controller selects the random data integrity protection for a UE session based on UE context. The network control signals the random integrity protection for the UE session to a wireless access node which signals the UE. A wireless access node generates data units for an interval. The wireless access node randomly selects ones of the data units to reach a downlink amount for the interval. The wireless access node converts the selected data units into integrity-protected units. The wireless access node wirelessly transfers the unprotected data units and the integrity-protected units to the UE. The UE determines the amount of the integrity-protected data units for the interval. The UE determines data integrity of the unprotected data units based on the amount of the integrity-protected units for the interval.

Random data integrity protection in a wireless communication network

The system receives orbital information for at least one satellite of a non-terrestrial network. The orbital information includes the location and velocity of the at least one satellite. The system determines a location of a wireless device and the wireless device's location relative to the at least one satellite. The system calculates a connectivity window based on the relative location. The connectivity window is a time period at the location of the wireless device during which the wireless device receives a signal from the at least one satellite to perform a network connection with the non-terrestrial network. The system connects the wireless device to the non-terrestrial network when the connectivity window of the at least one satellite is open. The system prevents the wireless device from searching for a network connection to the non-terrestrial network when the wireless device is outside the connectivity window of the at least one satellite.

An access network can allocate a bearer for a network service associated with a quality-of-service (QoS) value (QV) and a retention-priority value (RPV), and determine a bearer ID for the service based on the QV, the RPV, and a supplemental priority value (SPV) different from the QV and from the RPV. Upon handover of a terminal, session(s) carried by a bearer allocated by the terminal can be terminated. That bearer can be selected using IDs of the bearers and a comparison function that, given two bearer IDs, determines which respective bearer should be terminated before the other. Upon handover of a terminal to an access network supporting fewer bearers per terminal than the terminal has allocated, a network node can select a bearer based on respective QVs and RPVs of a set of allocated bearers. The network node can deallocate the selected bearer.

Systems and methods for facilitate wireless communication are disclosed. In one example aspect, a wireless communication device includes a processor that is configured to determine, for a user equipment that operates in a dual connectivity mode using a first frequency range associated with the device and a second frequency range associated with a secondary device, that a release of the secondary communication node has been triggered. The processor is configured to determine that the user equipment previously operated in a single connectivity mode using a carrier aggregation of two or more carriers in the first frequency range associated with the device and transmit a message to the user equipment to reconfigure the user equipment to use the carrier aggregation of two or more carriers in the first frequency range.

System and methods for smart cell selection and reselection are described. A mobile device may attempt to camp on a cell in a tracking area that has advertised a particular frequency band. If the mobile device is unable to recognize an information element identifying a different subset of the advertised frequency band than that supported by the mobile device, the mobile device will store a record of the tracking area and the advertised frequency band and compare future cell information broadcasts to the entry, avoiding attempts to operate within cells in the same tracking area advertising the same frequency. In this way the mobile device conserves resources by avoiding actions in incompatible cells and avoids storing information about many cells by only storing the tracking area information.

Smart UE cell selection and reselection

A cellular communication network may be configured to use a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) base station and a New Radio (NR) base station to implement a Non-Standalone Architecture (NSA) configuration, in an environment in which the NR base station uses multiple frequency bands that provide respective bandwidths. During an NSA connection with a mobile device, LTE signal strength is used as an indicator of whether the device is within the coverage area of a given NR frequency band. When the LTE signal strength indicates that the device has moved into the coverage area of a frequency band having a higher bandwidth than the currently active NR connection, the device is instructed to release and reestablish its NR connection in order to reconnect using the best available NR frequency band. LTE A1 and/or A5 event measurements may be used to evaluate signal strengths and as triggers for NR release/reestablish operations.

When initiating a Voice-over-IP (VoIP) communication session between an originating device (MO) and a terminating device (MT) on a packet-switched network, network components associated with the MO may encounter a failure when preparing resources for the session, such as a failure to establish a dedicated bearer with the MO. This might typically cause the system to abort the session. Instead, the network components are configured to detect the failure and to initiate a handover to a circuit-switched communication network so that the session may be conducted through the circuit-switched communication network. The failure may be detected by a component of a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) Radio Access Network (RAN) of the network, by a Mobility Management Entity (MME) of the network, or by some other network component. Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) procedures may be used to implement the handover.

A connection between a user equipment (UE) and an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) can become disrupted due to network-side issues with the IMS, an access network, or a core network. The UE can initiate a watchdog timer to determine when a previously-established IMS connection may be unusable due to such a network-side issue. If the watchdog timer expires, for example because the IMS does not reply to a message sent by the UE before the watchdog timer expires, the UE can toggle an airplane mode on and off. Toggling airplane mode on and off can deactivate and then re-activate a transmission interface of the UE, and cause the UE to establish a new usable connection with the IMS that may not be affected by the network-side issue that disrupted the previously-established IMS connection.

A wireless communication system may support two types of networks, such as a 4-Generation (4G) network and a 5-Generation (5G) network. The 4G network is accessed through Long-Term Evolution (LTE) base stations. The 5G network is accessed through New Radio (NR) base stations. An LTE base station can be configured to broadcast information regarding whether it supports Non-Standalone Architecture (NSA) Dual Connectivity in conjunction with an associated NR base station. When a communication device receives an indication that NSA Dual Connectivity is available, the communication device selects a decision value based on the frequency bands that would be used during an NSA session anchored by the LTE base station. The communication device then uses the decision value in combination with the current 4G signal strength to determine whether 5G communications are currently available and whether to display a 5G symbol on the status bar of the communication device.
