A machine management system provides a system and method for communicating user data with a device connected to a network. The device may register for service by the network, causing the machine management system to establish a special communications path through the network when it is determined that the device is a machine device. Thereafter, user data transmitted by the machine device (or transmitted to the machine device) may be communicated using the special communications path. In certain embodiments, the special communications path may be established such that existing network elements are not involved in the transmission of communications with the machine devices, thereby minimizing the impact on implementing the system and method on existing network elements, alleviating the burden of serving these machine devices using existing network elements and permitting the implementation of device-specific services for machine devices.

Establishing network connectivity for transmitting network traffic to or from machine devices

A user device may be configured to identify a received transport bearer channel, via which a group of content streams are received, the transport bearer channel including a group of logical bearer channels that each correspond to a particular transport layer session, each transport layer session corresponding to a particular one of the content streams; receive a selection of a particular content stream, of the group of content streams; identify a particular logical bearer channel, of the group of bearer channels, that corresponds to the particular content stream; extract a transport layer session from the identified particular logical bearer channel; provide, from a transport layer of the user device and to an application layer of the user device, the particular content stream from the transport layer session; and present the particular content stream.

An exemplary method includes a content delivery system 1) detecting a request provided by an access device associated with a user to access network content by way of a network provided by a network service provider, the network content associated with a content provider and maintained by a content provider subsystem, 2) determining that a data usage charge for access by the user to the network content by way of the network is subsidized by the content provider in accordance with a subsidized access arrangement between the content provider and the network service provider, and 3) providing the user with subsidized access to the network content in accordance with a rule set associated with the subsidized access arrangement. Methods and systems for providing subsidized access to network content

Techniques are provided for delivering content to mobile communication devices related to interactions of members with a user community. The method involves detecting a communication session involving a mobile communication device; determining one or more context parameters associated with the communication session; and delivering content related to the context parameters to one or more mobile communication devices. Data is stored at a central computing entity that indicates association or membership of a plurality of mobile communication device users in a user community. The central computing entity detects when an action is taken by one mobile device user that is a member of the user community, and sends a notification to members of the social circle based on the detected action. These techniques allow individuals who are involved in a user community to maintain their interaction with the user community using their mobile communication devices.

A device may request location information for a location reference device (LRD); receive, based on the request, the location information for the LRD via a cellular network connection; transmit, via the cellular network, an instruction to direct the LRD to activate a non-cellular radio on the LRD; receive wireless signals outputted via the non-cellular radio; determine a distance between the user device and the LRD based on a strength of the wireless signals received by the user device; and audibly or visually indicate, by the user device, the determined distance between the user device and the LRD.

A system is provided that enables the delivery of multiple concurrent mobile applications to a mobile communication device. A concurrency application server interfaces to a mobile switching center to obtain call parameters in order to determine a context of a mobile device call. The concurrency application server also interfaces with equipment in a data network. A concurrency application plug-in resides on the mobile communication device to enable the device to switch between two or more active mobile applications on the device, either under user control or automatically. The concurrency application server determines a context of a call or other activity engaged by the mobile device user to determine what additional content to deliver for display on the mobile device, or what other mobile applications to invoke for the mobile device.

Systems and methods for providing concurrent mobile applications to mobile communication devices

The present invention is directed to a technique for collaborative browsing among users at two or more different PCs. In an illustrative system in accordance with the present invention, copies of selected URLs are shared among collaborating PCs, each of which uses the URL to retrieve the corresponding document. In this system, a PC is configured to select hyperlinks for itself and one or more other PCs. Each URL corresponding to a selected hyperlink is communicated via the Internet (using standard Internet protocols) to a server. The server broadcasts the URL to the collaborating PCs each of which retrieves the corresponding document in conventional fashion. The server knows the IP addresses of the collaborating PCs through a collaboration set-up process which occurs in advance of the actual collaborative browsing session.

A method, system and apparatus for internetworking WWAN and WLAN are disclosed. More specifically, a method, system, and apparatus for a mobile station to sense and select a WLAN or a WWAN are disclosed. A mobile station may communicate according to an 802.xx wireless local area network air interface protocol via WLAN logic or according to a wireless wide area network air interface protocol via WWAN logic. The mobile station detects RF energy in the 802.xx spectrum and, in response to the energy detection, determines whether there is an 802.xx WLAN capable of servicing the mobile station by performing a scanning operation. If there is an 802.xx WLAN capable of servicing the mobile station, the mobile station selects the WLAN logic so that it may communicate via an air interface. Under some embodiments, WWAN has information identifying the areas in which capable WLANs operate and the WWAN provisions the mobile station with at least a subset of such information. The mobile station uses such area-identifying information to determine whether to perform the RF energy detection operation. The information may be cell ids, or GPS information.
