The data transfer appliance includes an operating system, one or more computing processing units (CPU's), a memory, and a data storage system. The computer-implemented method includes the step of implementing data capture from a data storage system to the data transfer appliance. The computer-implemented method includes the step of storing the dedupe form of the data in the data transfer appliance by; providing a capture utility, wherein the capture utility comprises a data traversal engine and a data read engine.

The state machine has three states. 'Dormant' state when the GC thread is inactive and all writers freely ingest data into dedupe file system without any need for synchronization with GC. 'Data gathering' state when the GC thread determines the dedupe chunks for deletion in a garbage list and writers check for data chunks in the garbage list and filters out processed data.

Methods and systems of a dedupe storage network for image management

In the dedupe storage network priority to data replication needs to be given over the garbage collection (GC) activity. For this purpose GC running on any site should not impose any locking on its peer sites for replication. For replication activity GC activity must be completely transparent. In the dedupe storage network, the retention policy of a replicated image is controlled by the site where the image was originated. Distributed GC running on the originating site can only inform the replication sites the list of expired replicated images and cleanup of replicated garbage chunks from its remote FS database for corresponding replication sites. But it cannot cleanup garbage chunks from replication sites. Garbage chunks can only be cleaned by the local GC running on that site.

Various systems and methods can be used to perform backup to tape. For example, one method involves detecting an amount of storage in a tape drive that is available for concurrent access. The method then compares the size of a plurality of backup images to the amount of storage prior to initiating an archive operation. The method then involves adding information identifying a backup image to a list of backup images to be included in an archive operation and performing the archive operation, which involves writing the backup images to tape drive.

Efficient tape backup using deduplicated data

A method, system, computer system, and computer-readable medium to search contents of a large number of files. Data are read sequentially from a storage device without using a file system. Physical location information for the files is obtained and used to construct files from the data read. Such physical location information can be obtained, for example, by accessing a file system mapping catalog without causing the file system to read the files. Accessing the mapping catalog can be performed quickly because only metadata is read from the mapping catalog. The constructed files can then be searched for content without the overhead of the file system. Content such as virus signatures and keywords can therefore be discovered much more quickly. Furthermore, because the device is read sequentially, storage locations belonging to more than one file are read only once, further improving the performance of the content search.

A method and apparatus for remediating backup data to control access to sensitive data is described. In one embodiment, the method for facilitating sensitive data remediation from backup images without a separate data store includes examining the backup images to identify sensitive data and modifying remediation information associated with the sensitive data, wherein the remediation information restricts access to the sensitive data to at least one corresponding access group.

Systems and methods for performing backups

Various systems and methods cache extent information for use in off-host backups. One method involves detecting that a first set of one or more blocks of client data has not been relocated subsequent to a prior off-host backup operation while also detecting that a second set of one or more blocks of the client data has been relocated subsequent to the prior off-host backup operation. In response to detecting that the first set has not been relocated, the method provides a media server with a previously calculated set of mapping information for the first set instead of recalculating that mapping information. In contrast, in response to detecting that the second set has been relocated subsequent to the prior off-host backup, the method recalculates mapping information for the second set. The media server is provided with the recalculated mapping information instead of previously calculated mapping information for the second set.
