A system and method for optically measuring a parameter of an object uses a first segment of the object captured as a first frame of image data using a first imaging region of an image sensor array and a second segment of the object as a second frame of image data using a second imaging region of the image sensor array, which is larger than the first imaging region, to determine a displaced distance of the object relative to the image sensor array.

The instant disclosure relates to an integrated optic module for adapting in a finger sensing apparatus. The integrated optic module comprises an illumination portion including a light guiding array arranged to direct incident light from the electronic module toward the window module at a predetermined angle of incidence and an imaging portion having an imaging lens array arranged thereon to direct reflected light from the window module toward the electronic module for photo imaging. The micro-lens array includes an elongated recognition unit having a row axis substantially normal toward the light guiding array and a navigation unit adjoining the recognition unit and offsetting the row axis thereof. The optic module mediates a window module and an electronic module to provide both finger navigation and fingerprint recognition capabilities.

A touch input system includes a light-emitting device, a bent light guide and a light detector. The light-emitting device emits light. The bent light guide receives the light emitted by the light-emitting device and guides the light to travel in a direction across a face of a display screen. The light detector detects the light.

A system and method for optically tracking a mobile device uses a first displacement value along a first direction and a second displacement value along a second direction, which are produced using frames of image data of a navigation surface, to compute first and second tracking values that indicate the current position of the mobile device. The first tracking value is computed using the second displacement value and the sine of a tracking angle value, while the second tracking value is computed using the second displacement value and the cosine of the tracking angle value. The tracking angle value is an angle value derived using at least one previous second displacement value.

Reflection of light from a surface is sensed by emitting light from a light emitting diode and focusing the light using an aspherical emitter lens to illuminate a reflecting surface. Light reflected by the reflecting surface is focused onto a photodetector using an aspherical collector lens. The light emitting diode is displaced from the optical axis of the aspherical emitter lens and the photodetector is displaced from the optical axis of the aspherical collector lens.

A system for identifying a characteristic of a printing media includes a light source module that has a light emitting diode (LED) and an aspheric lens and a light detection module that has a photodetector and an aspheric lens. The light source module and light detection module are oriented with respect to a printing media such that the focusing points of the respective aspheric lenses are located at a common position on the printing media. The system differentiates between printing media types by applying light to the surface of the printing media and measuring the light that is reflected from the surface.

A technique for relative velocity determination between a surface and a velocity determination system involves capturing a set of outputs from a first photosensor array and then comparing subsequently captured sets of outputs from a second photosensor array to the set of outputs from the first photosensor array until a satisfactory match is found between the outputs. Once a satisfactory match is found, the elapsed time between the capture of the two sets of outputs represents the time to travel the known separation distance between the two photosensor arrays. Given the known distance of travel and the elapsed time to travel the distance, the relative velocity is a simple calculation of the distance traveled divided by the time to travel the distance.

The bi-curvature lens disclosed has a bottom hemispherical portion and a top aspherical portion. Light emitting diodes and photo detectors used in conjunction with bi-curvature lenses display symmetrical radiation intensity profiles, in accordance with Infrared Data Association standards and protocols.
