Various embodiments may provide an electromechanical responsive film. The electromechanical responsive film may include a composition including sodium (Na), potassium (K), niobium (Nb) and oxygen (O). The composition may have a formula (NaK)NbO, wherein 0≤x<1, wherein 0≤y<1, and wherein 0<x+y<1. The composition may satisfy at least one condition selected from a group consisting of a first condition of (x+y+4)/2≤(3−δ)≤(x+y+5)/2 and a second condition of 0<δ<1.

A multi-layered piezoelectric ceramic-containing structure There is provided a multi-layered piezoelectric ceramic-containing structure comprising: a metal substrate; a metallic adhesive layer on a surface of the metal substrate; a non-metallic thermal barrier layer on the metallic adhesive layer; and a piezoelectric ceramic layer sandwiched between a first electrode layer and a second electrode layer, wherein the first electrode layer is on the non-metallic thermal barrier layer. A noise management system for a window includes an active noise control (ANC) module and a passive sound absorbing module. The ANC module is disposed in or adjacent a ventilation channel of the window and configured to substantially cancel low-frequency noise entering the ventilation channel. The passive sound absorbing module is disposed in or adjacent to the ventilation channel and configured to absorb both high-frequency noise entering the channel and harmonic sounds generated by the ANC module.

A fluid jet dispenser using at least two multilayer piezoelectric actuators is provided. The fluid jet dispenser includes a dispensing head and an electrical driver. The dispensing head includes at least two d-mode multilayer piezoelectric actuators, a displacement magnifying element mechanically coupled to the d-mode multilayer piezoelectric actuators, a piston, and a nozzle. More preferably, the two d-mode multilayer piezoelectric actuators operate in an anti-phase condition. The electrical driver is electrically coupled to the d-mode multilayer piezoelectric actuators for displacing the actuators in directions substantially perpendicular to polarization of piezoelectric layers in the d-mode multilayer piezoelectric actuators in response to charging and discharging of the actuators by the electrical driver, to generate a fast movement of the piston to jet a pressurized fluid out of the nozzle of the dispensing head.

Wireless piezoelectric accelerometers and systems are provided. A wireless piezoelectric accelerometer may comprise a piezoelectric sensing element configured to sense mechanical acceleration and produce an electrical charge signal in response of the sensed mechanical acceleration, a signal processing module (SPM) configured to convert the electrical charge signal into a voltage signal, and process and digitize the voltage signal, and a wireless module configured to modulate and transmit the digitized voltage signal as wireless signals. The piezoelectric sensing element, the SPM and the wireless module are packaged in a casing. The casing comprises a metallic shielding chamber configured to enclose the piezoelectric sensing element. The casing further comprises a non-metallic portion located in relative to the wireless module to allow transmission of the wireless signals. Corresponding wireless piezoelectric accelerometer systems are also provided.

Systems and methods for monitoring plastic deformation of a structural material are provided. An acoustic wave actuator is configured to generate acoustic wave signals to be propagated within the structural material and is in-situ fabricated on the structural material at a first location. An alternating current (AC) electric signal source drives the acoustic wave actuator to generate the acoustic wave signals at a predetermined frequency. One or more acoustic wave sensors detect the acoustic wave signals generated by the acoustic wave actuator and propagated within the structural material. More particularly, the acoustic wave detectors are configured to detect both fundamental and second harmonic acoustic signals at the predetermined frequency. The acoustic wave sensors are in-situ fabricated on the structural material at one or more second locations.

Systems and methods for monitoring plastic deformation of a structured material

The present invention provides a product and manufacturing method for electro-optic ceramic material having the composition (A'(1-y)A&#x2033;y)LnxMO3 wherein 0&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.1; 0&#x3c;y&#x3c;1; A&#x2032; and A&#x2033; are independently, alkali metals; Ln is a lanthanide metal; and M is a transition metal. The present invention provides a product and manufacturing method for an electro-optic device that is operable at room temperature and the properties of which are tunable by an applied external electric field.

The present invention discloses a method of preparing a lead-free piezoelectric thin film comprising the steps of: providing a precursor solution comprising at least one alkali metal ion, a polyamino carboxylic acid, and an amine; depositing the precursor solution on a substrate to form a film; and annealing the film. The present invention also provides a lead-free piezoelectric thin film prepared according to the method, a precursor solution for use in the method and a method of preparing the precursor solution.

According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a photo-sensor comprising: an optically transparent substrate; an electrode pair; and a photoactive film with electrical polarization located between the optically transparent substrate and the electrode pair, wherein the optically transparent substrate is configured to transmit incident radiation received by the optically transparent substrate to the photoactive film and wherein the electrode pair is configured to receive charge carriers generated by the photoactive film in response to the transmitted incident radiation.

A method of forming a vinylidene fluoride (VDF) oligomer or co-oligomer film on a substrate is disclosed. The method comprises forming a VDF oligomer or co-oligomer precursor solution; depositing the VDF oligomer or co-oligomer precursor solution onto the substrate to form a preliminary VDF oligomer or co-oligomer film on the substrate; and applying uniaxial pressure on the preliminary VDF oligomer or co-oligomer film and the substrate at an elevated temperature to form the VDF oligomer or co-oligomer film on the substrate. The substrate may comprise a metal surface which may be used as a bottom electrode and a top electrode may be deposited on the VDF oligomer or co-oligomer film. The VDF oligomer or co-oligomer film, the bottom electrode on the substrate and the top electrode on the VDF oligomer or co-oligomer film form an electrical device.

The present invention discloses a method of preparing a lead-free piezoelectric thin film comprising the steps of: providing a precursor solution comprising at least one alkali metal ion, a polyamine carboxylic acid, and an amine; depositing the precursor solution on a substrate to form a film; and annealing the film. The present invention also provides a lead-free piezoelectric thin film prepared according to the method, a precursor solution for use in the method and a method of preparing the precursor solution.

The miniaturized piezoelectric accelerometer includes a support frame () having a cavity () and a seismic mass () supported by a plurality of suspension beams () extending from the support frame (). Each of the suspension beams () has a piezoelectric thin film coated on a top surface thereof, with a pair of inter-digital electrodes () deposited on an upper surface of each piezoelectric thin film. The presence of acceleration excites bending and thus strain in the piezoelectric thin film, which in turn causes electrical signals to be generated over terminals of the electrodes (). To collect constructively the output of the electrodes (), one terminal of each of the electrodes () is routed to and electrically connected at a top surface () of the seismic mass ().

Miniaturized piezoelectric accelerometers

According to embodiments of the present invention, a piezoelectric actuator is provided. The piezoelectric actuator includes a shear mode piezoelectric material including a first arm and a second arm intersecting each other, the shear mode piezoelectric material having a polarization direction oriented at least substantially along a length of the first arm, wherein the shear mode piezoelectric material has a first surface and a second surface opposite to the first surface, the first surface and the second surface being adapted to undergo a shear displacement relative to each other along an axis at least substantially parallel to the polarization direction in response to an electric field applied between the first surface and the second surface in a direction at least substantially perpendicular to the polarization direction.

Piezoelectric actuator, head gimbal assembly including the same and method of forming the same

Thin films of ferroelectric material with a high mole fraction of Pb(AB)Osubstantially in a perovskite phase, wherein A is zinc or a combination of zinc and magnesium, and B is a valence 5 element such as niobium or tantalum, have been prepared. Typically, the mole fraction of Pb(AB)Oin the ferroelectric material is &#x3e;0.7. The method for preparing the thin films of ferroelectric material comprises providing a precursor solution containing lead, A, and B; modifying the precursor solution by addition of a polymer species thereto; applying the modified precursor solution to a surface of a substrate and forming a coating thereon; and (d) subjecting the coating to a heat treatment and forming the film in the perovskite phase. Optimal results have been obtained with PEG200 as the polymer species.
