A faceplate optical sub-assembly is provided for accommodating a plurality of optical receptacles mounted in a faceplate of a computing device. The faceplate optical sub-assembly accommodates one or more optical receptacle housings having optically-connected front and rear optical bays. A collar having a single aperture surrounds the one or more optical bays, and a shell structure comprised of a pair of interlocking sub-shells engages on the rear of the collar. A gasket is disposed between the collar and the shell structure. The collar, gasket, and shell structure provide electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding for optical connections made between optical fibers inserted in the front and rear optical bays, and rigidly engage the plurality of optical receptacle housings. The single aperture of the collar and the multi-part shell structure allows for insertion of a fiber jumper assembly into the rear bays of the faceplate optical sub-assembly prior to insertion into a faceplate of a computing device.

Modular faceplate optical sub-assembly

In one example in accordance with the present disclosure, a subsystem is provided. The subsystem includes a signal driver/receiver capable of sending and receiving data and signals over a passive cable. The subsystem includes a connection discovery engine to access a low-level enable or disable control of the signal driver/receiver and a low-level loss-of-signal (LOS) control of the signal driver/receiver. The connection discovery engine modulates the enable or disable control to send a local unique ID of the signal driver/receiver over the passive cable. The connection discovery engine monitors timings of transitions on the LOS control to receive, over the passive cable, a remote unique ID of a signal driver/receiver in a second subsystem connected by the passive cable.

Discovering connection of passive cables

In one example in accordance with the present disclosure, a system is provided. The system includes a first subsystem and a second subsystem, connectable to each other via a passive cable, and each connected to a high-level management tool. Each subsystem includes a signal driver/receiver capable of sending and receiving data and signals over the passive cable and a connection discovery engine to access low-level power up/down controls of the signal driver/receiver. The connection discovery engine is to, via physical layer communication, send a local unique identifier (ID) of the particular signal driver/receiver over the passive cable. The connection discovery engine is further to, via physical layer communication, receive, over the passive cable, a remote unique ID of the signal driver/receiver in the other connected subsystem. The connection discovery engine is further to send the local unique ID and the remote unique ID to the high-level management tool.

In one embodiment, a system includes at least one tone generator, a first transmitter, and a second transmitter. The at least one tone generator is operable to generate a plurality of modulation tones comprising at least a first modulation tone having a first tone frequency and a second modulation tone having a second tone frequency that is different from the first tone frequency. The first transmitter is operable to apply the first modulation tone to a first optical signal such that at least a portion of the first optical signal is divided into one or more sidebands. The second transmitter is operable to apply the second modulation tone to a second optical signal such that at least a portion of the second optical signal is divided into one or more sidebands.

System and method for mitigating four-wave-mixing effects

An example method includes receiving radio frequency (RF) signals from a cable modem termination system (CMTS) in a small form factor pluggable optical transmitter; converting the RF signals to optical signals in the small form factor pluggable optical transmitter; and transmitting, by the small form factor pluggable optical transmitter, the optical signals on a network. More specific embodiments can include RF signals that are modulated, where a modulation error ratio (MER) of the RF signal varies substantially linearly with Carrier to Composite Noise (CCN), and the converting is implemented by a laser transmitter. Other, more specific, embodiments include routing the RF signals through a pre-distortion RF amplifier RF variable attenuator, and coupling the optical transmitter to a chassis of the CMTS.

System and method for facilitating fiber access transport using pluggable radio frequency optics

A multi-wavelength optical transmission system includes a plurality of primary optical transmitters, each being configured to provide directly modulated analog optical signals at non-uniformly spaced apart wavelengths. An optical multiplexer having a plurality of optical input ports receives the analog optical signals from each of the plurality of primary optical transmitters and provides a wavelength division multiplexed signal over an optical fiber coupled at an output thereof. A spare optical transmitter is coupled to an input port of the optical multiplexer and, in response to detecting failure of a failed one of the plurality of primary optical transmitters, is tuned to provide a directly modulated analog optical signal at a spare wavelength that is selected as to be non-uniformly spaced relative to at least some of the non-uniformly spaced apart wavelengths according to tuning data.

Raman cancellation and management in CATV transport and distribution via RF spectrum inversion

An optical wavelength router separates an input signal into two complementary output signals. A beamsplitter of the wavelength router separates the input signal into a first beam and a second beam. A first resonator reflects the first beam producing a group delay that is dependent on wavelength. Similarly, a second resonator reflects the second beam. The center wavelength of the second resonator is offset relative to that of the first resonator by one half of the free spectral range of the first resonator, so that the resonance frequencies of the second resonator are matched to the anti-resonance frequencies of the first resonator. The beams reflected by the resonators interfere within the beamsplitter to produce two output signals containing complementary subsets of the spectrum of the input signal (e.g., even optical channels are routed to a first output port and the odd optical channels are routed to a second output port).

Dispersion-compensated optical wavelength router

An optical add/drop wavelength switch is controllably changed from a bridge state, in which output is identical to input, e.g. a Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) input, and an add/drop state, In which a signal input to an add port is substituted for a particular wavelength subrange of the WDM input, other wavelengths of the WDM input being unchanged. In one embodiment, the wavelength subrange of the WDM signal is given a polarization different from other wavelengths of the WDM, such as by using a stacked waveplate or other optical filter or polarization discriminator. The differently-polarized wavelengths can the be spatially separated, e.g. by a birefringent element or a polarization beam splitter, preferably In a bit-controlled fashion, such as by using a liquid crystal or other polarization controller. Polarization controllers and discriminators can be used similarly to selectably align or combine the add signal with the portion of the WDM signal outside the subrange. The add/drop wavelength switch can be used, e.g. In an optical token ring network and/or to make-up an optical crossbar for exchanging any arbitrarily designatable channels, e.g. among a plurality of multi-channel optical fibers.

Optical add/drop wavelength switch

An interferometer receives an input optical signal and outputs a signal after changing at least the dispersion of said signal. At least portions of the interferometer are adjustable to adjust at least a first dispersion parameter. Examples of dispersion parameters which are adjustable include dispersion magnitude, center wavelengths and waveshapes or slopes. Preferably the dispersion in the output signal is substantially reduced or substantially eliminated, compared to the dispersion of the input signal. By providing for adjustability of one or more dispersion parameters, a dispersion compensator can be appropriately adjusted for use in a variety of applications.

Adjustable chromatic dispersion compensation

An optical wavelength division multiplex (WDM) demultiplexer can be provided in substantially passive form. In one embodiment a wavelength filter separates alternate channels to provide a first output containing even-numbered channels and a second output containing odd-numbered channels, each output having channels separated by a bandwidth twice the channel separation bandwidth of the original WDM signal.

Programmable optical add/drop multiplexer

An optical wavelength add/drop multiplexer provides communications between two optical links supporting wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). A wavelength slicer spatially separates the input signal into two sets of channels. An optical filter, such as an interference filter, spatially separates the a subset of the input channels into an array of separated channels. A programmable optical add/drop switch array selectively routes channels from an array of input ports to an array of drop ports, substitutes channels from an array of add ports in place of the dropped channels, and routes the remaining input channels and added channels to an array of output ports. The channels from the output ports of the said add/drop switch array are then combined and transmitted into the second optical link. A network of wavelength slicers can be used to spatially separate the input signal into a larger number of sets of channels that can either be accessed by a number of add/drop switch arrays, or passed unchanged as &ldquo;express lanes&rdquo; to the second optical link. In an alternative embodiment, a circulated drop filter consisting of an optical circulator and a series of fiber Bragg gratings is used to select a predetermined series of input channels to be processed by the add/drop switch array, with the remaining channels being passed by the circulated drop filter as express lanes.

Optical wavelength add/drop multiplexer

A system for dealing with faults in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communications between two terminals connected by at least two optical fibers monitors the status of communications over both optical fibers. If both optical fibers are operating normally, a first set of channels is routed over the first optical fiber and a second set of channels (which is mutually exclusive of the first set of channels) is routed over the second optical fiber. However, if a fault is detected in either optical fiber, the first terminal combines the first and second sets of channels and routes the combined channels over the remaining optical fiber to the second terminal. The second terminal separates the combined channels to recreate the first and second sets of channels. Wavelength slicers can be used to multiplex and demultiplex the channels at both terminals. This architecture allows the first and second sets of channels to be interdigitally spaced.
