This invention relates to coating compositions comprising at least one aminoplast crosslinker resin A, binder resins B that have active hydrogen functionality, and a catalyst composition C, wherein the catalyst composition C is a mixture of an organic sulfonic acid C1, and an amine C2 which may be primary, secondary, or tertiary, and which must have a pKa value of not more than 10, and preferably not less than 4, a process for the preparation thereof, and to a method of use thereof.

This invention relates to aminoplast crosslinker resins compositions based on at least partially alkylated reaction products A of melamine, formaldehyde and an alkanol with the following parameters: the ratio of the amount of substance n(CHO) of combined formaldehyde to the amount of substance n(Mel) of melamine is in the range of from 5.6 mol/mol to 6.2 mol/mol, the ratio of the amount of substance n(RO) of alkyl ether groups in the crosslinker resin to the amount of substance n(Mel) of melamine is in the range of from 5.0 mol/mol to 5.6 mol/mol, the mass fraction of monomer in the resin, calculated as the ratio of the mass of monomer m(1) to the mass m(A) of the reaction products A is between 35% and 55%, to a process for their preparation, and to a method of use thereof as crosslinker in combination with hydroxy-functional polymers for coating of heat-sensitive substrates.

This invention relates to a crosslinking composition comprising a compound having the structure of Formula I:where Z is a hydrogen, an alkyl of 1 to about 18 carbon atoms, an aryl of about 6 to about 24 carbon atoms, an aralkyl of about 7 to about 24 carbon atoms, or &#x2014;NRR; each Ris independently hydrogen, an alkyl, aryl or an aralkyl of 1 to about 18 carbon atoms or R; where Ris &#x2014;CHRORorwhere R is alkyl, halogenated alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, halogenated aralkyl, alkoxyalkyl or an alkaryl having from 1 to about 24 carbon atoms; Ris a hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxyalkyl or an alkaryl having from 1 to about 24 carbon atoms; and where the alkyl or aryl groups in each radical may optionally have heteroatoms in their structure; B is a residue of a poly(alkylaldehyde) with n aldehyde groups; n is an integer of 2 to about 4; and A is an amino moiety derived from the group consisting of guanamine and melamine. The above composition may be prepared by reacting a melamine or guanamine with a mono(alkylaldehyde), a poly(alkylaldehyde) and an alcohol.

Melamine and guanamine-based crosslinking composition

An acid cured coating composition containing a hydroxyfunctional acrylic or polyester resin and a 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-tris-carbamate. Also provided is an acid cured coating composition containing a hydroxyfunctional acrylic or polyester resin, a crosslinking agent such as a melamine-formaldehyde or a related aminoresin, and a co-crosslinking agent derived from a triazine tris-carbamate such as 2,4,6-tris-(butoxycarbonylamino)-1,3,5-triazine. Also provided is an improved method of coating using the above coating compositions. The coating compositions described in this invention have lower cure temperatures, lower formaldehyde emissions during cure, and produce films and objects which have superior environmental etch resistance than the conventional melamine-formaldehyde coatings which do not have a triazine tris-carbamate co-crosslinker.

Low molecular weight crosslinking agents useful in coatings based on esters of acrylamidoglycolate ethers are disclosed. The copolymeric crosslinking agents of the invention are prepared by copolymerizing a reactive acrylamidoglycolate monomer such as MAGME.RTM. methyl acrylamidoglycolate methyl ether with comonomers such as methyl methacrylate or butyl acrylate. The process of preparing the copolymeric crosslinkers of the invention makes use of chain transfer agents to limit the molecular weight of the crosslinking agents to 10,000 or less.

An improved process for preparing a one component self-crosslinking resin is provided. The process for making the self-crosslinking resin is carried out by copolymerizing an oxime-blocked m-isopropenyl-alpha, alpha-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate (m-TMI), hydroxyethyl acrylate, and another unsaturated monomer at 75.degree. C. to 85.degree. C. in a polar organic solvent having a dipole moment of at least 3, such as acetonitrile. The polar solvent retards the thermal deblocking of the blocked TMI, thereby preventing the premature self-crosslinking and gelation of the copolymerization product prior to its use as a self-crosslinking resin.
