The system (10) uses an infrastructure transceiver apparatus (14, 16, 22) to receive (204, 304, 604) the signals (26, 28) and retransmit (208, 310, 610) them within the area (20). A communication unit (24) calculates responsive data, such as its approximate position, from the retransmitted signals and reports (406, 704) the responsive data to a host system via the infrastructure transceiver apparatus (14, 16, 22).

Method and apparatus for providing duplex communication service in

The system (10) uses an infrastructure retransmission apparatus (14, 16, 22) to receive (204, 304, 402, 404) the signals (26, 28) and retransmit (208, 310, 410) them within the area (20). Geolocation signals (26) from navigation satellites (12) can be retransmitted (208, 310) using the infrastructure retransmission apparatus (14, 16, 22), thus enabling a communication unit (24) located within an obstructed area (20) to calculate its position.

Method and apparatus for simplex delivery of signals to obstructed

Subscriber units (26) in a satellite communication system (10) send and receive data messages at optimum times. Each subscriber unit (26) has a pre-programmed database that includes a collection of messages (302), such as data (314), fax (316), pre-recorded voice (318), pager (320), or video files (322). Pre-programmed times include low traffic times (404) and/or most economical times (406) at the point of origination and/or destination. Low traffic time information (404) and most economical time information (406) are stored in the subscriber unit (26) and may be updated by the communication system (10). The subscriber unit (26) sends and receives messages at either a pre-programmed or low traffic time (404) or most economical time (406). The satellite communication system (10) calculates message delivery time when different from a user's time zone. A user is notified when a message is sent and received. The subscriber unit (26) stores the messages for future access. The message storage system (55) is reusable in other communication system equipment.

Apparatus and method for sending data messages at an optimum time

A constellation of satellites which are distributed around the earth serves as a communications infrastructure that supports autonomous position determination and reporting of that position to a remote location. Satellites continuously broadcast acquisition signals. Position determining units are remotely programmed to activate upon the occurrence of an activation event. If PDUs can capture an acquisition signal, then they engage in activities which lead to determining their position and they coordinate their communications with the requirements of the communications infrastructure. To determine position, a location pulse may be transmitted on a regular schedule. The location pulse is transported between a fast moving satellite and a PDU. The movement of the satellite causes different location pulses to have different propagation delays and Doppler characteristics. By analyzing changes in propagation delays and Doppler characteristics, a procedure determines a position for a PDU.

Remote position determination

A calibration system utilizing existing location techniques for a global radio telecommunication system 10 autonomously calibrates the communication system's location system by routing precision location data through system 10. Calibration reduces system errors by allowing time slots to remain narrow. The precision data is carried by existing commands throughout the system to measure location errors inserted by satellites 12. A gateway 16 compiles and evaluates received calibration data and determines when to update all gateways 16 with new satellite variance data tables 435. The calibration system provides early warning of degradation of system components and long-term analysis of system performance.

Satellite-based geolocation calibration system and method

A location system relies upon a non-coherent, FDM/TDM communication scheme to measure location parameters. A locator unit moves relative to the locatable unit. A series of messages are communicated between the locator unit and the locatable unit. Through feedback provided from the locator unit to the locatable unit, the locatable unit adjusts its reference frequency and time base so that signals it transmits arrive at the locator unit on a desired frequency and at a desired time slot. The locatable unit estimates Doppler and propagation duration and transmits the estimates to the locator unit. The locator unit measures offsets between desired frequencies and time slots and actual frequencies and time slots. The offsets are combined with the locatable unit's estimates of Doppler and propagation duration to form an integrated Doppler parameter and an integrated propagation duration parameter. The integrated Doppler and propagation duration are used to determine location.

Location system and method with acquisition of accurate location

A paging system (10) includes any number of spaced apart transmitters (12), each of which has its own area (15) of coverage. A population of subscriber units (24) freely roams between the areas (15). When a subscriber unit (24) roams to a new area (15), a call is placed from a telephone instrument (22) to a destination controller (28) through the public switched telecommunication network (21). A subscriber ID and location data are transferred to the system (10) during this call. The location data are used internally by the system (10) to route pages to only the transmitters (12) whose areas (15) correspond to the location data, and only these transmitters (12) broadcast the pages. Subscriber units (24) may generate the location data which the system (10) uses in routing pages to transmitters (12). A position-determining receiver (42) may directly obtain location data from a positioning system (34). Alternatively, location data may be obtained from transmissions broadcast by the transmitters (12).

Wide area paging with roaming subscriber units

A radio telecommunication system includes a number of satellites in low earth orbits. Any number of subscriber units communicates with the satellites. A single subscriber unit communicates with a single satellite using electromagnetic signals so that a measurement processor can obtain Doppler component, propagation duration, and real time measurements of the signals. A location processor converts these measurements into a geographic location with respect to the earth. A service processor determines which qualifications to apply to communication services offered by the system. These qualifications are based on the subscriber unit's location. A call processor carries out the qualifications when requests to setup calls involving the subscriber unit are received by the system and during calls involving the subscriber unit.

A location processor converts these measurements into a geographic location with respect to the earth through an iterative process. The location processor determines the accuracy required for each location determination, and performs only the number of iterations needed to meet the accuracy requirements. A service processor determines which qualifications to apply to communication services offered by the system. These qualifications are based on the subscriber unit's location.
