A method and system for setting a hold-timer duration is disclosed. The method involves a first network initially serving a user equipment device (UE), wherein serving the UE comprises allocating at least one resource to the UE and using the at least one resource to serve the UE. The method also involves detecting transition of the UE from being served by the first network to being served by a second network. The method further involves, after the UE transitions to the second network, applying a hold-timer having a hold-timer duration for release of the at least one resource. Further, the method involves, before setting the hold-timer duration, the first network receiving from the UE a report including an indication of radio frequency (RF) quality of the second network. The method also involves using the reported indication of RF quality as a basis to set the hold-timer duration.

Disclosed is a method and corresponding system for managing CSFB pre-registration. A first network serving a UE releases the UE from being served by the first network and redirects the UE to transition from being served by the first network to being served by a second network. The first network then detects that the UE has returned to be served by the first network. In response to detecting the return of the UE, and based on the previous releasing and redirecting of the UE, the first network then initiates a pre-registration of the UE with the second network to inform the second network that the UE is now reachable via the first network.

Illustrative methods and systems may help to more efficiently use network resources in fall back scenarios. An illustrative method involves a network component: (a) receiving a first paging request directed to a target user-entity (UE) for a first communication of a first communication type, (b) initiating a first paging process to page the target UE for the first communication, (c) before the first paging process is complete, receiving a second paging request directed to the target UE, wherein the second paging request for a second communication of a second communication type, wherein the second communication type that has a higher priority than the first communication type, and (d) in response: (i) refraining from assigning network resources for the first communication, and (ii) using a result of the first paging process to determine whether or not to assign network resources for the second communication.

Presently disclosed is a method for reducing interference in a wireless distributed antenna systems. In an embodiment, interference is reduced by selectively placing a first wireless remote unit in a reduced signal interference mode. A controller sends a signal, such as a reverse link power-down signal, to the first remote unit after detecting less than a threshold incoming signal strength at the first remote unit. In an alternative embodiment, the controller requests that a given remote unit switch to the reduced signal interference mode when the controller is receiving signals from a mobile station through at least two different remote units.

Interference cancellation system and method for wireless antenna configuration

A method for selecting a frequency band, from among a plurality of frequency bands controllable by a radio network controller (RNC), to carry a data communication. The method may include obtaining frequency band usage measurements for a plurality of frequency bands, and using the frequency band usage measurements to select a particular frequency band of the plurality of frequency bands to carry the data communication. Frequency band usage measurements may be based on how many idle slots (and/or data channels) are carried through each of the plurality of frequency bands during a measurement time period. A comparison of the frequency band usage measurements can be used to determine which frequency band sent the greatest number of idle slots (or the fewest number of data channels). The method provides for selecting a frequency band best suited (e.g., has the most available capacity for carrying a data communication) for carrying the data communication.

Methods are provided for implementing selective personality negotiation during session negotiation. In one embodiment, an access node maintains an access-node-supported set of one or more personalities supported by the access node, wherein the access-node-supported set comprises a personality 0. The access node receives from an access terminal an access-terminal-supported set of one or more personalities supported by the access terminal, wherein the access-terminal-supported set also comprises the personality 0. Responsive to receiving the access-terminal-supported set, the access node negotiates a session-specific set of one or more personalities with the access terminal for use by the access terminal during a session, the session-specific set consisting of personality 0 and a first personality, wherein the first personality is a highest-numbered personality in the intersection of the access-node-supported set and the access-terminal-supported set.

A method of communicating with a mobile station. The method includes receiving forward link signals from a central base station at a remote base station and transmitting the forward link signals from the remote base station to the mobile station. The method also includes receiving reverse link signals from the mobile station at the remote base station and transmitting the reverse link signals from the remote base station to the central base station. The method further includes cooperatively adjusting a transmission power level for communication between the mobile station and the remote base station.

A wireless signal repeater will function to boost the strength of signals being communicated wirelessly between a base station and a mobile station. At the same time, however, the wireless signal repeater will read control channel messages transmitted by the base station and will obtain from the messages an indication of outside temperature and an indication of local time. The repeater will then display the outside temperature and local time information for viewing by a user. Advantageously, the repeater will thus become a more functional object in the eyes of the average lay-person, rather than functioning merely to boost wireless signal levels.

A wireless repeater for receiving, amplifying and transmitting one or more wireless signals. The repeater comprises a signal processing device for determining one or more attributes of a wireless signal received from a base transceiver station and a memory for storing a reference list that includes a list of one or more preferred frequency bandwidths to be received, amplified and transmitted. The repeater further comprises a controller coupled with the signal processing device for comparing the one or more attributes of the wireless signal from the base transceiver station with the reference list, where the controller selects a first active set of one or more frequency bandwidths from the preferred frequency bandwidths based on the comparison. The repeater still further includes a first reception filter, where the first reception filter, in response to control signal(s) from the controller, filters out signals, communicated to the first reception filter, that have frequencies outside the first active set of frequency bandwidths.

Base station controlled vertical handoff is disclosed. When a hybrid access terminal is operating under a first air interface protocol (e.g., IS-2000), in a mode (e.g., active) in which the terminal does not search for the presence of wireless service under a second air interface protocol (e.g., IS-856), the terminal sends a request to a base station seeking to hand off to a wireless coverage area under the protocol. The base station then determines (e.g., by reference to the PN offset specified in the request) that the target coverage area additionally provides service under the second protocol. Responsively, the base station causes the terminal to transition to a second mode (e.g., dormant) in which the terminal does search for the presence of service under the second protocol. The terminal may thereby discover the presence of service under the second protocol and may hand off to operate under the second protocol.

Base station controlled vertical handoff in a hybrid wireless communication system

A method is provided of targeting short message service (SMS) message for delivery to a mobile station. When an SMS center (SMSC) in a cellular network receives an SMS message and is to send it to a mobile station, the SMS center determines the location of the mobile station either directly or indirectly via a location register. The SMS center correlates that location with a particular base transceiver station serving that location. The SMS center then causes the SMS message to be delivered to the mobile station via that particular base transceiver station. The SMS center thus can avoid sending SMS messages to all base transceiver stations in a given area, thereby conserving network resources.
