An arbitrary customer instance is transferred from a customer environment to a target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment as a transferred image. An image adjustment plan, capturing at least one adjustment required to render the transferred image compliant with standards of the target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment, is formulated. The image adjustment plan is executed to adjust the transferred image to obtain an adjusted image compliant with standards of the target managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment. The adjusted image is on-boarded into the managed-infrastructure-as-a-service cloud environment as a standard image thereof.

A conformance checker is received on a system that contains hostable content, and is executed. One or more results provided by the conformance checker are evaluated; and the hostable content is migrated to a destination host in accordance with the evaluating step.

At least one target virtual disk descriptor that describes at least one virtual disk associated with an existing target virtual machine in a target virtualized environment is merged with at least one source virtual disk descriptor that describes at least one virtual disk associated with a source. The merging is carried out to obtain at least one merged virtual disk descriptor compatible with the target virtualized environment. The at least one virtual disk associated with the existing target virtual machine in the target virtualized environment is replaced with the at least one virtual disk associated with the source, in accordance with the at least one merged virtual disk descriptor.

A system for virtualizing information technology (IT) appliances can include an IT appliance hosting facilities software. The IT appliance hosting facilities software can be implemented at a layer of abstraction above a virtual machine host, which is implemented in a layer of abstraction above a hardware layer of a computing system. The IT appliance hosting facilities software can include programmatic code functioning as virtualized hardware upon which a set of IT appliance software modules are able to concurrently run. The IT appliance hosting facilities software can provide caching, application level security, and a standardized framework for running the IT appliance software modules, which are configured in conformance with the standardized framework.

Runtime environment for virtualizing information technology appliances

According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a persistent CGI model is used to provide a CGI program extension that captures the advantages of the presently known CGI model but overcomes many of the related disadvantages. The persistent CGI program is executed as a sub-process of the web server. The persistent CGI program receives input from web browsers through standard input and environment variables and provides output through standard output in the same manner as existing CGI programs. However, unlike existing CGI programs, the persistent CGI program is not automatically terminated after output is transmitted to the web browser by the web server application. Instead, the persistent CGI program remains active and waits for additional input from the same web browser. This allows transactions to remain open and, accordingly, state data relating to on-going transactions can be maintained in between web browser requests. Additionally, since the CGI process is persistent and maintains communication with the same web browser for multiple requests, there is no need to instantiate a separate CGI process for each subsequent request from the same web browser for the same transaction. Therefore, the persistent CGI programming model of the present invention can reduce system overhead and streamline system operation.
