A method and apparatus for adjusting an oscillator in a network for correcting frequency drift is disclosed. Nodes in the network exchange time stamp messages with each other. The time stamp messages contain the time the stamp message is transmitted, node measurement value of an interval and an uncertainty value for the nodes estimation of the interval. By exchanging measurements of common intervals, nodes can determine how far their oscillators have drifted from the correct oscillating frequency.

Synchronization of nodes

The present invention discloses a method for quickly and easily adjusting the gain of an antenna system. According to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the output power of the base station's antenna system is adjusted during the base station's installation process. In the adjustment procedure, the output power of the base station is set to a predetermined value. When a switch is closed, the output power of the base station's associated active antenna system is measured and compared to a stored reference value. If the comparison indicates that the measured output power is above or below the stored reference value, the attenuation of the antenna system is automatically changed in order to properly adjust the gain of the antenna system. The present invention facilitates base station installation by providing a fast and easy gain adjustment method which requires no intervention from the base station or telephone network.

Method for adjusting the gain of an antenna system

Each transmitter/receiver pair of a radio base station is connected via an antenna bus and radio frequency feeder to antenna near parts equipment such as active antennas, boosters and tower mounted amplifiers. Automatic configuration and calibration of the antenna near parts equipment is accomplished by establishing communication between the base station and each of its connected antenna near part components. Each antenna near part component sends its identification to the base station over the antenna bus at power-on. Furthermore, communications selectively sent over the radio frequency feeder are monitored to determine the connectivity between individual transmitter/receiver pairs of the base station and each antenna near parts equipment. These radio frequency feeder communications are further processed to determine calibration data for configuring each antenna near parts equipment for optimal operation.
