An apparatus and method are provided for performing ocular laser surgery using a patient interface having a posterior contact surface that may include surface irregularities that were generated during manufacturing of the patient interface. A beam delivery system having a focusing lens, scanning subsystem and adaptive optic (e.g. deformable mirror) is provided for guiding the surgical laser beam through the patient interface and to a desired focal spot location. An optical detector generates image data representing the posterior patient interface surface which is then processed by a computer system to identify surface irregularities by comparing the image data to a reference surface or axis. In particular, a surface irregularity can be identified as having a z-axis component; a tilt component and a surface profile component. Each irregularity component can be compensated separately by sending an adjustment signal to one of the beam delivery system components.

Dimensional compensator for use with a patient interface

A methodology is provided for correcting the placement of a laser beam's focal point. Specifically, this correction is done to compensate for displacements of the focal point that may be caused when implant material (e.g. an Intraocular Lens (IOL)) is positioned on the optical path of the laser beam. The methodology of the present invention then determines a deviation of the laser beam's refracted target position (uncompensated) from its intended target position. A calculation of the deviation includes considerations of the laser beam's wavelength and refractive/diffractive characteristics introduced by the implant material. This deviation is then added to the refracted target position to make the refracted target position coincide with the intended target position of the focal point. The laser beam will then focus to its intended target position.

System and method with refractive corrections for controlled placement of a laser beam's focal point

A system and method are provided in which an iris or eye image is taken during a refractive diagnostic analysis. The image is employed for aligning data from the analysis with data from other refractive analysis instruments, as well as aligning a refractive surgical tool, such as a laser, with the eye for treatment. Further, the stored iris image is compared with the patient's iris before treatment, verifying that the correct eye is to be treated with a developed treatment pattern. A variety of refractive instruments can be used, such as corneal topography systems and wavefront aberration systems.

Iris recognition and tracking for optical treatment

A selectively marked contact lens having, in one aspect, marks in an optical zone region on a surface thereof and, in another aspect, different marks outside an optical zone region of the lens, for an in-vivo lens. With the lens in-vivo, the subject's eye is illuminated and the lens is imaged. A fast algorithm is used to determine the mark coordinates in relation to a measured pupil coordinate to determine position and/or orientation of the contact lens. A wavefront aberration measurement can also be obtained simultaneously with the contact lens position measurement, as well as pupil size. A fast algorithm provides for online measurements; i.e., at a repetition rate of 10 Hz or greater, over a selected time interval. Blinking periods are determined and anomalous lens position and/or wavefront information is discarded. A most frequently occurring wavefront and/or contact lens position/orientation is determined over the selected time interval.

Method and apparatus for online contact lens evaluation

A customized corneal profile is provided by combining corneal topography data with captured wavefront aberration data to form a course of refractive treatment of the eye. In one embodiment, the captured wavefront data is employed within the area of a pupil, while the corneal topography data is employed in the area outside of the pupil. In other embodiments, the topography data is adjusted based on the wavefront data, a course of refractive treatment is simulated and displayed upon the topography data, and an initial evaluation of the suitability of a patient for treatment is performed based on the topography data.

Customized corneal profiling

A system and method for providing a predictive outcome in the form of a predictive best instruction for a therapeutic ophthalmic correction of a patient's vision defects. The predictive best instruction is derived from prospective therapeutic-outcome-influencing, new information that is analyzed in conjunction with optimized, historical therapeutic-outcome information. The instruction is preferably an optimized, custom, photoablative algorithm for driving a photoablative, excimer laser. The instruction can be provided on a fee basis.

System and method for predictive ophthalmic correction

An aperture card is provided for insertion into a laser refractive ablation system for use in laser ablating the cornea. The aperture card is designed for single surgical use for surgical precautionary considerations and to achieve the highest quality ablations, in addition to reproducibility. The aperture card is loaded into the laser refractive ablation system in a path between the laser system and the eye. The aperture card is precisely located by positioning means and ablative lasing action is inhibited if the card is not positioned within tolerance. Alternatively, the laser system can determine the position of the aperture card and adjust a computed ablation profile or otherwise adjust the optical system to adapt for any misalignment of the apertures in the aperture card. The card contains a 'soft spot' aperture capable of shaping a spatial intensity distribution with a unique profile. The profile has a substantially flat top while the sides of the profile slope until an ablation intensity threshold is reached, at which point the sides become substantially vertical. The card can contain more than one soft spot aperture along with a 'hard spot' aperture that creates a square-shaped profile used for testing fluence. Each soft spot aperture is formed by a central aperture and a plurality of holes of different sizes surrounding the central aperture and arranged such that the overall diffractive effect produces a soft spot spatial intensity profile compared to the hard, square-sided profile.

Customized refractive correction

A compact excimer laser system is provided that includes argon fluoride laser gas, electronic, and laser head all compactly arranged such that the patient bed can rotate over all of these components. This allows the patient bed to be rotated for easy egress of the patient without striking the head against an optical extension through which the excimer laser is fired onto the patient's eye. Further, an automated lamellar keratoplasty system is incorporated into the electronics and components of the laser system so that laser in situ keratomileusis can be easily performed.

Excimer laser eye surgery system

A device readable medium for use in controlling a laser vision correction system includes a storage structure having stored therein a pre-programmed first, readable, corrective instruction reference that corresponds to an encoded customized corrective instruction determined by a calculation module external to the medium. The encoded customized corrective instruction is executable by a laser vision correction laser platform for correction of a refractive defect when the corrective instruction reference is properly recognized. A laser vision correction system including the device readable medium is described. A remunerative model relating to the device readable medium is disclosed.

Laser vision correction apparatus and control method

A apparatus and method for controlling an apparatus for removing tissue from the eye performs various types of corrections using a relatively large beam, but oscillating, or dithering, that being to prevent reinforcing ridges from being formed during the tissue removal process. Further, various types of correction, such as hyperopia and astigmatism correction, are performed using a large beam that is scanned over the area to be ablated using overlapping shots. Further, the epithelium in the area to be treated is removed using an infrared fluorescent dye to dye the epithelium, and then observing the fluorescent patterns from the epithelium area to be removed. Once a certain area is no longer fluorescent after laser shots, smaller shots are then applied, selectively removing the epithelium from the remaining regions. Again, the fluorescence patterns are observed, and the process is repeated until no epithelium remains. At this point, all of the epithelium is removed, and further a map is created of the initial epithelial thickness at each point in the area from which the epithelium was removed. Using two astigmatism correcting ablation patterns intersecting at an angle, a lens is created capable of correcting for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Further, overlapping shots using a relatively large fixed spot size provide for reduced thermal heating, ridgeless treatment patterns, reduced shot count, and simplified equipment.

Apparatus for modifying the surface of the eye through large beam laser polishing and method of controlling the apparatus

A method and business architecture for providing vision correction to a patient involves obtaining wavefront aberration measurement information and, optionally, patient history data, ordering data, dispensing data, billing data, and other information, from the patient; transmitting the various data to respective appropriate platforms, e.g., transmitting the wavefront aberration information to a custom lens supply platform; producing a custom lens for the patient; and delivering a custom lens to the patient in a personalized manner. The method further involves fitting and measurement processes including in-situ lens shaping and custom manufacture of contact lenses, IOLs, inlays or onlays by laser ablation, lathing, casting/molding and machining. Business architectures according to the invention include segregating vision correction method steps into contractual, revenue generating business transactions.

Customized vision correction method and business

A distributed system is provided for controlling excimer laser eye surgery. A topography system, a computer system, and an excimer laser eye surgery system are provided, with the topography system providing profile data to the computer system, and the computer system calculating and providing an ablation shot pattern to the excimer laser eye surgery system. At least the computer system and the excimer laser eye surgery system are located remotely, and the excimer laser eye surgery system can receive data from more than one computer system and more than one topography system. This allows for better utilization of resources.
