Nanostructured shapes comprising at least a first part and a second part. The first part has a longitudinal axis L and comprises a first absorbing material and an emitting material. The second part is connected to the first part and comprises a second absorbing material. The second part mainly absorbs light with direction of polarization other than the long axis L of the first part, and the nanostructured shape emits light mainly polarized along the long axis L of the first part. The disclosure further relates to an assembly of nanostructured shapes, to a method of synthesizing nanostructured shapes and to a polarizing light emitting plate comprising such nanostructured shapes.

Nanostructured shapes having anisotropic absorption and emission

A method is described for preparing a nanorods assembly. The method comprises providing a mixture comprising at least a liquid crystal and nanorods and depositing said mixture on the surface of at least substrate. The method further comprises aligning said nanorods with their long axis of the nanorods along a preferred direction on said substrate resulting in a nanorods and liquid crystal assembly, said aligning being performed by applying an external alternating current electrical field.

An optical device is described for irradiating at least one object in a medium. The optical device may be a microfluidics device, and comprises at least one integrated planar waveguide that enables providing sheet irradiation of objects in the medium. A characterization system including such an optical device and a corresponding method of characterizing an object or a fluid are described.

Methods and systems for optical characterisation

The present invention relates to the removal of ion contaminations from liquid crystal layers in liquid crystal display devices. The ions are removed by means of so called ion pumping, which utilizes the anisotropic viscosity of liquid crystals. The ions are pumped up and down in the liquid crystal layer by means of an alternating electric filed. The alternating electric field simultaneously alters the alignment of directors in the liquid crystal. The viscosity in the liquid crystal is related to the director directions, and the ions are thereby moved in non-closed trajectories. The inventive ion pumping can be further improved using an asymmetric or biased alternating electric field.

Lateral ion pumping in liquid crystal displays

The present invention relates to a method and system for determining particle properties. Such properties may for example be charge, size, drift, etc. The method comprises determining () an electric mobility distribution based on detection of individual particles. The latter may be performed for a single particle over time, for a plurality of particles at the same time or in a combination thereof. The method also comprises deriving a particle property based on a periodicity in the electric mobility distribution.
