Methods of cleaning-in-place are contemplated whereby a suspension is introduced into a mechanical system containing contaminated surfaces. The solid-phase particles suspended within the suspension are functional to at least partially clean the contamination. Following the at least partial cleaning, the suspension may be purged from the mechanical system. In this way, it may be seen that modalities of decontamination may be achieved which may be operative to decontaminate many types and degrees of contamination.

Methods for cleaning-in-place

Compositions for forming an improved vapor mitigation barrier are contemplated, such compositions being formed as an aqueous mixture of an asphalt component and a latex component, with the latex component including a chemically resistant latex, the chemically resistant latex being an acrylonitrile butadiene copolymer, an elastomeric fluoropolymer, or both. Such compositions, when cured and formed into a vapor mitigation barrier, may be seen to substantially mitigate diffusion of chlorinated hydrocarbons across the barriers. Also contemplated are methods for forming such vapor mitigation barriers, as well as vapor mitigation barrier products formed via the application of such compositions to various substrates.

Vapor mitigation barriers

Systems and methods for treating contaminated soil and groundwater are contemplated. An aqueous slurry may be formulated from particles of solid-phase organic materials having particle sizes between 0.1 and 100 microns, which serve as organic electron donors which may biodegrade subsurface contaminants. The aqueous slurry is injected into an environmental subsurface at a pressure lower than the fracture pressure of the subsurface, which will result in a more uniform distribution of the slurry throughout the subsurface, rather than concentrated deposition of the solid-phase organic materials at points along the fractures, and will also tend to reduce disruption of the architecture of the soil matrix, increasing the utility of the remediated soil and preventing an increase in the rates of generation and efflux of methane and nitrous oxide from the soil to the atmosphere.

Methods for remediating contaminated soil and groundwater using solid-phase organic materials

Barriers for improved vapor mitigation are contemplated, such barriers being formed as a cured latex-asphalt mixture applied to the metal surface of a metallized substrate. The latex-asphalt mixture, prior to curing, comprises an emulsion of an asphalt component, a latex component, and water. Such barriers may be seen to substantially mitigate diffusion of chemical contaminants across the barriers in the form of gas or liquids. Also contemplated are methods for forming such barriers, whether fabricated off-site for installation on site, fabricated in-situ.

Metal-based membranes for vapor intrusion mitigation

Compositions and methods for treating contaminated soil and/or ground water in situ. The compositions and methods comprise stabilized forms of colloidal remediation agents that are used to remediate contaminants, namely, organic and inorganic contaminants. The compositions and methods of the present invention are operative to transport particulate remediation agent materials through a matrix of soil and groundwater upon application by injection, gravity feed, or percolation into soil and groundwater, which in turn sequester, destroy or stabilize contaminants out of water to thus decontaminate groundwater in place without the cost or disruption associated with digging the contaminated soil and groundwater out of the ground for on-site purification or disposal at a hazardous waste landfill.

Colloidal agents for aquifer and metals remediation

Methods for increasing hydrophobicity of native water-bearing zones or aquifers comprising the step of permanently embedding non-degradable, solid colloidal materials formed to have a particulate size of less than 10 microns. Exemplary materials include activated carbon, zeolites and hydrophobically treated clays. The particulate colloidal materials are coated with an agent to facilitate their distribution, including anionic polymers, chelating agents or combinations thereof. The materials are applied preferably by low pressure injection and are particularly effective at containing the migration of hydrocarbon contaminants, typically present as a plume, for at least several decades.

Method of increasing hydrophobicity of native water-bearing zones

Compositions and methods for in situ ground water remediation. The compositions comprise a colloidal biomatrix comprised of sorbent particles, such as zeolites, organoclays and activated carbon, dispersed in aqueous solution that are injectable into the permeable zones of an aquifer to be treated. Once deposited into the permeable zones of the aquifer, the groundwater concentrations of contaminants in those zones are depleted, thus increasing the rate of diffusion of contaminants of the less permeable zones. The compositions and methods of the present invention can be used to treat any organic contaminants and provide rapid remediation of contaminated ground water by adsorption and biodegradation of such contaminants.

Treatment of aquifer matrix back diffusion

Compositions and methods for treating contaminated soil and/or ground water in situ. The compositions and methods comprise stabilized forms of colloidal activated carbon that are used to quickly sorb contaminants. Unlike traditional activated carbon in granular or powder form, the compounds and methods of the present invention are operative to transport particulate activated carbon through a matrix of soil and groundwater upon application by injection, gravity feed, or percolation into soil and groundwater, which in turn decontaminate groundwater in place without the cost or disruption associated with digging the contaminated soil and groundwater out of the ground for on-site purification or disposal at a hazardous waste landfill.
