Systems, methods and a mobile device for using policy defined by the operator to control the interfaces on which data is sent and received by the device are provided. The policy can be dynamically updated by the operator, by pushing new policy to the device for implementation. The policy can define that the device should switch certain data between two or more available interfaces at certain times, or when certain data may be sent or received over a particular interface. The device may receive new policy from the operator in order to help with the operator's own operational objectives, such as traffic shaping or other traffic limitation to ease congestion or enforce service agreements. A policy implementing corresponding traffic limitation or shaping on the air interface between the mobile device and network base stations can be sent to the mobile device so as to reduce signaling congestion on the air-interface.

Mobile device and method for switching communication sessions between alternative network resources

Embodiments of the invention provide the ability to use policy defined by the operator to control the interfaces on which data is sent and received by a device. The policy can be dynamically updated by the operator, by pushing new policy to the device for implementation. The policy can define that the device should switch certain data between two or more available interfaces at certain times, or may define when certain data may be sent or received over a particular interface. Advantageously, the device may receive new policy from the operator in order to help with the operator's own operational objectives. For example, the operator may be engaging in traffic shaping or other traffic limitation, for example to ease congestion or enforce service agreements.

Adapting data transfer rules in a mobile communications network

The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for indicating a channel resource. The apparatus including a transmitter arranged to transmit an indicating acquisition indication channel signature wherein said indicating signature is used to indicate an enhanced dedicated channel resource (uplink resource set) to be used by a user equipment; a memory configured to store a mapping associating a random access channel signature sequence to one or more of the indicating acquisition indication channel signatures; and a data processor configured to use the stored mapping to relate a random access channel signature sequence to one or more of the indicating acquisition indication channel signatures; configured to relate each indicating acquisition indication channel signature to an uplink resource set such there is a three-way mapping between the random access channel signature sequence, the one or more indicating acquisition indication channel signatures and the uplink resource set.

Resource allocation

A method of an uplink transfer at the UE side in a wireless communications system over a wireless interface between a radio network and a user equipment node uses a first mode of transfer and a second mode of transfer. The first mode of transfer involves sending a first message by the UE to a Node B of the wireless communication system. The second mode of transfer involves receiving a resource by the UE from the Node B, and sending at least one subsequent message by the UE to the Node B, the at least one subsequent message omits an UE id.
