The disclosure relates to a nanocomposite polymeric film including a thermoplastic polymer matrix such as polypropylene or other polyolefin, a coupling agent-modified organoclay reinforcement, and a polymeric compatibilizer bound to the coupling agent-modified organoclay, in particular as a thin film with controllable thicknesses. The disclosure further relates to masterbatch additives formed from the coupling agent-modified organoclay and the polymeric compatibilizer bound to the coupling agent-modified organoclay as well as related methods for making the nanocomposite polymeric film and/or processing recycled plastics. The inclusion of the coupling agent-modified organoclay reinforcement improves the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite polymeric film and the rheological properties of polymer melts including the nanocomposite polymeric film components. The coupling agent-modified organoclay leads to strain-hardening behavior for the polymer melts, which in turn can improve extensional viscosity values and melt processability for film blowing.

Thermoplastic polymeric nanocomposite films and related methods

A method of monitoring a location of a nanoparticle within a material is described herein. The method includes the steps of providing at least one nanoclay particle, attaching a fluorescent tag to the at least one nanoclay particle, and determining a fluorescence of the fluorescent-labeled nanoclay particle. The method also includes forming the material including the at least one fluorescent-labeled nanoclay particle, depositing the material in an aqueous solution, and detecting a movement of the fluorescent-labeled nanoclay particle from the material to the aqueous solution.

Method for labeling nanoclay for tracking them within different solid and liquid material

A foam comprising a nanocomposite comprising a bulk linear semi-crystalline polyolefin containing no cross-links or branched polymers; an organoclay; and a polymeric compatibilizer for enhancing physical interactions between the bulk linear semi-crystalline polyolefin and the organoclay, wherein the linear semi-crystalline polyolefin combines with the organoclay to form the nanocomposite is provided. Novel nanocomposites and methods of producing the nanocomposites and foams, such as flexible foams, are also provided. The resulting products are useful in a variety of applications, including thermoplastic flexible foam seals, thermoplastic foamed panels in vehicles, and thin-walled blow molded bottles.

Nanocomposites and nanocomposite foams and methods and products related to same

A system and method for uniformly coating one or more fibers (10) with particles of a material is described. The method uses a vibrator preferably an acoustic speaker (17b) in a housing (17c) to fluidize the particles (P.sub.1) in a chamber (17 or 30) to deposit them on spread fibers (10b). The fibers can be in the form of a tow of fibers. After the particles are coated on the fibers, the particles can be bonded to the fiber such as by using a heater (19). The resulting product has a uniform deposit of the particles and in the case of the tow of fibers can serve as a prepreg for laminate structures to be produced from the coated tow of fibers.
