A weatherstrip having a hard bearing layer with a surface coating for reducing sliding friction between the weatherstrip and a panel is disclosed. A body of the weatherstrip has a relatively low durometer and the bearing layer has a greater durometer, wherein an exposed surface of the bearing layer is covered with a coating, wherein the coating can include a multitude of particles.

A weatherstrip having a migration inhibiting layer including a butyl based elastomer, wherein the butyl based elastomer can include a blend of a halogenated butyl and EPDM. The migration inhibiting layer can be located on at least one of a dense portion and an expanded portion of the weatherstrip and is selected to substantially preclude the passage of decomposition products, thereby reducing odor emanation from the strip and discoloration from staining materials. The migration inhibiting layer may also include coloring agents thereby providing a colored weatherstrip.

A laminate having a metal reinforcement and a bonding veneer is disclosed, wherein the bonding veneer is a peroxide cured rubber including at least one of a polybutadiene and (meth)acrylate. A feature layer is formed on the bonding veneer and can be any of a variety of cross-linkable materials such as EPDM and EPM.

A weatherseal for repeatedly and releasably contacting a panel to provide a weather resistant seal therebetween. The weatherseal includes a substrate having a contact layer on the portion of the substrate that contacts the panel. The contact layer includes a multitude of surface treated ultra high molecular weight olefinic particles, such as ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, in a thermoset material such as cross linkable urethane, wherein some of the embedded particles define the area of contact between the weatherseal and the panel.
