Described herein is aerobic granular sludge gravity-driven membrane system, methods of making and using thereof are described. The aerobic granular sludge (AGS) integrated with a gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration system is an energy efficient wastewater treatment system that takes advantage of AGS reactor systems integrated with gravity-driven membrane system to reduce membrane fouling and produce microbiologically and chemically safe water. The AGS-GDM system includes at least an AGS reactor tank containing raw wastewater and granular sludge and a membrane tank including one or more gravity-driven membrane(s).

Carbon-based single metal atom or bimetallic, trimetallic, or multimetallic alloy transition metal-containing catalysts derived from exoelectrogen bacteria and their methods of making and using thereof are described. The method comprising the steps of: (a) preparing a solution medium comprising at least an electron donor and an electron acceptor comprised of one or more salts of a transition metal; (b) providing exoelectrogen bacterial cells and mixing the exoelectrogen bacterial cells into the solution medium of step (a); (c) incubating the solution medium of step (b); (d) isolating the exoelectrogen bacterial cells from the incubated solution medium of step (c); and (e) pyrolyzing the exoelectrogen bacterial cells resulting in formation of the catalyst. The electron donor can be formate, acetate, or hydrogen.

Reduced graphene oxide is produced by adding graphene oxide and electrically active bacteria to a container. After a period of time reduced graphene oxide is produced by an interaction of the electrically active bacteria and the graphene oxide. The resulting composition of matter includes reduced graphene oxide and electrically active bacteria. The resulting composition of matter can be doped with a plurality of different elements.

An anaerobic electrochemical membrane bioreactor (AnEMBR) can include a vessel into which wastewater can be introduced, an anode electrode in the vessel suitable for supporting electrochemically active microorganisms (EAB, also can be referred to as anode reducing bacteria, exoelectrogens, or electricigens) that oxidize organic compounds in the wastewater, and a cathode membrane electrode in the vessel, which is configured to pass a treated liquid through the membrane while retaining the electrochemically active microorganisms and the hydrogenotrophic methanogens (for example, the key functional microbial communities, including EAB, methanogens and possible synergistic fermenters) in the vessel. The cathode membrane electrode can be suitable for catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction to generate hydrogen.
