A hybrid drivetrain is provided. The hybrid drivetrain comprises a power source, a transmission, and a tandem axle assembly. The transmission includes a primary clutch and is drivingly engaged with the power source. The tandem axle assembly includes a first axle and a second axle and is drivingly engaged with the transmission. One of the transmission and the tandem axle assembly includes a first motor generator in electrical communication with a battery. The first motor generator and the primary clutch facilitate operating the hybrid drivetrain as a hybrid drivetrain in a plurality of operating modes. The hybrid drivetrain may further comprise second and third motor generators in electrical communication with the battery to facilitate operating the hybrid drivetrain in a plurality of operating modes.

Distributed drivetrain architectures for commercial vehicles with a hybrid electric powertrain and dual range disconnect axles

A drive unit assembly. The drive unit assembly includes one or more first motors drivingly connected to at least a first end portion of a first shaft. A planetary gear assembly having a sun gear, one or more planetary gears, a ring gear and a carrier. At least a portion of the sun gear is drivingly connected to at least a portion of a second end portion of the first shaft and the carrier is drivingly connected to at least a portion of the one or more planetary gears. A differential input member is drivingly connected to at least a portion of the carrier and a differential assembly. At least a portion of a first axle half shaft is drivingly connected to the differential and is disposed within a hollow portion of said first shaft and a second axle half shaft is drivingly connected to the differential assembly.

A method of controlling an axle assembly includes providing an axle assembly in a first state. A first controller is provided in electrical communication with the axle assembly. The first controller determines if a source of power has an available amount of electrical energy that is within a predetermined range and a predetermined period of time has elapsed. If the available amount of electrical energy is within the predetermined range and the predetermined period of time has elapsed, then electrical energy is transferred from the source of power to an electric motor generator and an axle disconnect clutch is engaged to provide the axle assembly in another state.

Provided herein is an electric tandem axle having a first drive axle assembly having a first differential assembly drivingly engaged with a first drive axle; a second axle drive assembly having a second drive axle drivingly engaged with a second differential assembly having a first axle output shaft and a second axle output shaft and an axle disconnect clutch; an inter-axle assembly is drivingly connected to the first axle drive assembly and the second axle drive assembly; a motor-generator in driving engagement with the first and second drive axle assemblies; a planetary drive unit including a selection clutch in driving engagement with the first differential assembly, the inter-axle assembly and the motor-generator; and a controller connected to the motor-generator, selection clutch and axle disconnect clutch. The controller is configured to selectively engage and disengage the selection clutch and axle disconnect clutch to facilitate different modes of operation.

Electric drivetrain for a tandem drive axle

An electric drivetrain having a primary motor-generator assembly, an electric axle drive unit and a power source. The primary motor-generator assembly includes a primary mover, a first gearbox in driving engagement with the primary mover and a first clutch. The first gearbox is in driving engagement with the primary mover. The electric axle drive unit includes a differential assembly, a second motor-generator assembly in driving engagement with a wheel assembly and a third motor-generator assembly in driving engagement with another wheel assembly. The electric axle drive unit is selectively engaged with the primary motor-generator assembly via the first clutch. The first and second spring plates are moveable axially along the stationary guide rod by the drive nut to compress the compression spring.
