An apparatus with one or more force plates senses of center-of-pressure and force-angle in the sagittal plane for a standing individual to provide an indication of balance capability based on the deduced functional relationship between center-of-pressure and force-angle within a limited band of frequencies. In one embodiment this relationship may be expressed as an intersection point of the force vectors with respect to the individual's center-of-mass.

A walking training device provides substantial fixation of the user's feet against a movable footplate in the direction of the user's stride while allowing toe lift and heel lift necessary for natural walking. The harness system provides an approximation of a shallow crossed four-bar linkage to provide angulation without substantial translation.

A training device isolates muscular force direction from force magnitude to provide improved feedback to a user over conventional exercise equipment which implicitly conflates magnitude and force direction in producing purely kinematic feedback.

An electromechanical force sensor uses a rotating element that aligns with the force and may carry a force magnitude sensor simplifying and providing more accurate measurement of force-angle and force-magnitude. The ability to detect simply force-angle and force-magnitude enables a variety of training and exercise devices.

An improved vest design for cardiopulmonary resuscitation is disclosed. The vest includes an inflatable bladder capable of radial expansion to first conform to a patient's chest dimensions and then to apply circumferential pressure. The improved vest design affords ease of placement on a patient without concern for how tightly the vest is initially applied. Also disclosed are various vest designs that reduce the amount of compressed air that must be used for each compression/decompression cycle of the vest. These improvements lower the energy consumption and make smaller and portable cardiopulmonary resuscitation systems possible.
