A system and method are described for managing a plurality of sever nodes. In one embodiment, the sever nodes are organized into groups referred to as 'instances.' Each instance includes a group of redundant sever nodes and a dispatcher for distributing service requests to each of the sever nodes. In addition, a central message passing architecture is defined which allows the various instances to communicate with one another. In one embodiment, a hierarchical configuration data object is stored within a database and is centrally accessible by all of the servers from all of the instances. The hierarchical configuration data object organizes configuration data and binary data in a logical hierarchy which simplifies sever node management in an enterprise network.

A deployable template structure is described. In an embodiment, the deployable template structure includes sections for virtual machines deployable, filters, and component configuration settings. A deployable template may provide multiple instance definitions for a single system.

In an embodiment, an abstract configuration module acts like an informational proxy between components of a system. The configuration module provides a level of abstraction that allows for some properties to be abstracted instead of being hard coded into each node of the system.

A system and method for maintaining version information. An identifier ('ID') that identifies a collection of associated files is obtained. An index is generated that specifies the contents of the collection of associated files. The ID may be saved along with the index in a target version file to convey version information about the collection of associated files. Subsequently, the index may be extracted from the target version file to compare with a corresponding index extracted from a reference version file. The result of the comparison may be used to determine whether the contents of the collection of associated files match a reference.

Multi-level version format

A version file for maintaining version information is described herein. The version file comprises an identifier to identify a target collection of associated files and a target index specifying binary level contents of the target collection of associated files to compare with a reference index specifying contents of a reference collection of associated files. The version file farther comprises a checksum generated based on the identifier and the target index.

An accounting engine integrates with the composite service to monitor components and parameters of at least one service in the composite service, to provide reporting on the measurements and statistics associated therewith over time. The accounting engine aggregates data for components and services. One example provides the accounting infrastructure as an object-oriented program model, instantiating statistics as objects. The reporting distinguishes each statistic allowing analysis and optimization of processes and services.

Embodiments include a timeout event management system that registers timeout events and checks for and corrects inaccuracies in timing caused by hibernation or system time changes. The timeout event management system may trigger an event after an intended delay time or at an intended expiration time. A handler program may be called in response to the triggered timeout. In an additional embodiment, the timeout system may track timeout events in a priority queue data structure.
