A communication device wirelessly coupled to another communication device. The communication device includes a first transmitter and a first receiver. The first transmitter is configured to transmit first power control bit information to the base station over a reverse link. The first transmitter has a timeline manager, configured to transmit the first power control bit information at a first rate according to a first pattern within a frame. The first receiver is configured to receive second power control bit information from the another communication device over a forward link. The first receiver has an adaptive controller, configured to determine the first rate and the first pattern. The first rate and the first pattern are selected from a plurality of rates and patterns available for transmission of the first power control bit information and the second power control bit information.

A novel method and apparatus for initiating a reverse link intergenerational handoff in a CDMA communication system is disclosed. The inventive reverse link intergenerational handoff initialization method and apparatus measures and compares parameters between a serving base station of one generation and a target base station of another generation to determine the best possible handoff initiation time instant for performing a reverse link intergenerational hard handoff. The method and apparatus can utilize one of several embodiments to determine the best possible handoff initiation time instant. A pilot signal strength embodiment determines a handoff initiation time instant based upon the total pilot signal strength of both a serving and target base station. The E/Nembodiment determines a handoff initiation time instant based upon E/N(ratio of average power per bit to total received power spectral density) values of both a serving and a target base station. The disclosed method and apparatus decreases the probability of degraded or dropped calls during intergenerational handoffs.

A novel method and apparatus for controlling forward link power when an intergenerational soft handoff is performed in CDMA communication system is disclosed. The forward link power control method and apparatus of the present invention determines acceptable forward link power levels for a selected target base station during intergenerational soft handoff (ISHO) procedures. The method and apparatus of the present invention controls the forward link power for the selected target base station during an ISHO procedure. Open loop and slow forward power control embodiments of the present invention rely upon an observation that information regarding a mobile station serving forward traffic channel can be communicated to the selected target base station using an MSC. In another embodiment, a statistical value can be used to determine a forward link transmit power of a selected target base station. The RTC demodulation embodiment controls forward link transmit power of a target base station by directly demodulating an RTC or FPCC of a mobile station and obtaining power control commands. The method and apparatus of the present invention improves the performance, increases the Quality of Service (QoS), and improves the capacity of CDMA communication systems during complete intergenerational handoff procedures.

Method and apparatus for controlling forward link power during an intergenerational soft handoff in a CDMA communication system

The present invention a system and method are provided for performing an inter-frequency search with reduced loss of link frames in a CDMA system. The CDMA system includes a base station () and a mobile station (). The mobile station () has a searcher (), which searches for pilot channels. The signal strengths of these pilot channels are then reported to the base station (). This searching results in erased portions of a data frame (). After the signal strengths are reported to the base station (), the mobile station () informs the base station () of the parameters related to the search. These parameters may include the frame of the search, the start position of the search, and the length of the search. The mobile station () and the base station () then replaces the erased portions of the frame with corrective data such as soft zeros.

Method and apparatus for performing an interfrequency search

In a CDMA cellular radiotelephone system, a soft handoff (SHO) is performed when a mobile station communicates with a new inter-generation base station, without interrupting communications with the old base station. Currently, a SHO can only be used between CDMA channels having identical frequency assignments and within the same system generation (i.e., 2G&rlarr;2G, or 3G&rlarr;3G, where 2G is a second generation system, and 3G is a third generation system). The proposed IS-2000 standard for a 2G&rlarr;3G handoff is a hard handoff or &ldquo;Break-Before-Make&rdquo; procedure, which greatly reduces the quality of service (QOS). The present invention allows for SHO between second and third generation CDMA systems (2G&rlarr;3G and 3G&rlarr;2G), by modifying the proposed messaging structure. This provides a smooth service transition when a mobile station travels from one service area (i.e., 2G), to another service area (i.e., 3G), using the SHO or &ldquo;Make-Before-Break&rdquo; approach.

Forward link inter-generation soft handoff between 2G and 3G CDMA systems

A method for power control during soft handoffs is disclosed for a multi-user CDMA system having mixed system types, such as IS-95A/B and IS-2000. The procedure includes modifying the Forward Power Control (FPC) and Reverse Power Control (RPC) processing, in order to maintain proper power control between a mobile station and two different base stations during a soft handoff. The mobile station maintains the forward and reverse power control while still receiving forward links from different generation base stations, and while maintaining the reverse link to only one of these base stations. Prior to the soft handoff the second base station suspends FPC and RPC processing. Once the soft handoff is complete, the second base station resumes FPC and RPC processing. Furthermore, the mobile station's initial transmit power level is set to be within a predetermined limit.

Power control during inter-generation soft handoffs

A rate determination unit and methods for use in a receiver in a communication system that is adapted to receive communications at a plurality of different data rates is disclosed. The rate determination unit is configured to receive an encoded signal and determine the encoded signal's data rate without first requiring decoding of the encoded signal. In a preferred embodiment, the rate determination unit includes a plurality of hypothesis units and a hypothesis analyzer. Each hypothesis unit is arranged to determine a hypothesis value for a frame of the encoded signal at an associated one of the data rates. The hypothesis analyzer is arranged to compare selected hypothesis values, determine the frame data rate based on such comparisons, and output a rate indication signal based on the determined frame data rate. Preferably, a first one of the hypothesis units is arranged to sum a first plurality of absolute values that are associated with discrete samples, and a second one of the hypothesis units is arranged to sum a second plurality of absolute values. Each of the second plurality of absolute values is a sum of a plurality of samples.

Apparatus and methods for determining rate of transmitted variable rate data

Reverse channel circuitry for CDMA based mobile stations which allows carrier phase offsets to be implemented at baseband, thereby eliminating the need for multiple quadrature modulators and excessive D/A converters. In addition, just four baseband filters, two using scaled coefficients and the other two unscaled coefficients, are time multiplexed to produce in-phase and quadrature terms. The invention can lead to a significant savings in hardware and be a valuable tool in implementing multiple code channels with different carrier phase offsets.
