A combination active and passive mass damping device to attenuate vibrations in a structure caused by seismic and/or wind forces. A mass is actively rendered vibratable by a hydraulic actuator and passively vibratable by use of springs. The device normally functions as an active mass damper, but, in the event of a power failure, is automatically converted by a failsafe means into a passive mass damping mode.

Compound seismic response and wind control system

A method of connecting beams having an H-shaped section to a column having an H-shaped section of a steel frame construction with upper and lower flange fittings. The flange fitting comprises a substantially rectangular base plate to be connected to the column having centrally a continuous thicker portion from which the base plate is tapered toward opposite ends of the base plate, a supporting plate projecting from the thicker portion for supporting a flange of the beam and a reinforcement on the base plate forming a T-shaped portion with the supporting plate. First the supporting plate of the upper flange fitting is secured to one end of an upper flange of the beam in end-to-end relationship and the base plate of the lower flange fitting is bolted in position to the column. Thereafter, one end of a lower flange of the beam is located onto the supporting plate of the lower flange fitting, and the lower flange of the upper flange fitting are secured to the supporting plate of the lower flange fitting and the surface of the column, respectively.

Method of connecting beams and columns of steel frame construction

Fittings for connecting columns and beams of a steel frame construction, each comprising a base plate to be connected to the column by means of high strength bolts and formed centrally with a horizontal protrusion on the side of the beam and a horizontal plate extending from the horizontal protrusion adapted to be connected to the flange of the beam in overlapping relation by welding or bolting, a thickness of which horizontal protrusion at its bottom is more than that of the flange of the beam.

The upper flange fitting comprises a substantially rectangular base plate to be bolted to a web of the column and protrusions extending from the base plate to be welded to an upper flange and a web of the beam. The lower flange fitting comprises a substantially rectangular base plate to be bolted to the web of the column and a horizontal plate projecting from the base plate to be bolted to a lower flange of the beam.
