An image forming apparatus () includes an image forming section (), a plurality of recording paper trays (to), storage (), and a paper feed stage selecting section (). The image forming section () performs advanced printing based on a paper profile. The paper feed stage selecting section () selects a recording paper tray () from the recording paper trays (to) from which recording paper is to be fed to the image forming section () based on a printing instruction. When a specific paper profile is not associated with the selected recording paper tray (), the paper feed stage selecting section () notifies the image forming section () of a manual setting and causes the image forming section () to perform simple printing.

The reading device reads the sample image to generate read image data. The controller determines a start timing of reading processing by which the reading device reads the sample image. The controller causes the reading device to start the reading processing at the start timing. The controller determines a drive condition of the recording head based on the read image data.

The main control portion performs a job related to a function of the apparatus by controlling the operation of individual constituent elements of the apparatus, and on detecting an error that prevents continuation of the operation of the mechanical system included in the job being performed, feeds the mechanism control portion with an instruction to interrupt the control of the operation of the mechanical system, stores in the storage portion uncompleted data of the job corresponding to the operation of the mechanism control portion left uncompleted as a result of the interruption, reboots itself, and restarts the job by using the uncompleted data.

An image forming apparatus includes a processing circuit, a memory, a data reception circuit, a bus, and a transmission amount control circuit. An image forming apparatus including: a video memory; a load management unit that loads page data on a print image into the video memory page by page; a print engine that performs printing using the page data stored in the video memory; and a main management unit that, when printing of a page is completed as part of an electronic sort process, causes the video memory to retain the page data if there is a subsequent page to be printed using the same page data as that on the page, and deletes the page data from the video memory if there is no subsequent page to be printed using the same page data as that on the page.
