An optical cable has a center member, around which a plurality of coated optical fibers are tightly stranded. Each optical fiber is given uneven strains in its longitudinal direction. Adhesive resin is applied to surround each of the coated optical fibers and binds each of them to the center member to make an integral optical unit when cured.

Optical cable and its manufacturing method

A pair of V-shaped slot blocks mounted movably on a base in both the X and Y directions and a microscope for observing the opposed state of optical fibers contained on the blocks, are provided in an apparatus for fusion splicing optical fibers. The microscope is mounted movably in the X and Y directions under a base, thereby observing the opposed states of the optical fibers from below.

Apparatus for fusion splicing optical fibers

An optical connector for joining exposed fiber ends of coated fibers and a method of manufacturing a pair of ferrules for the optical connector. The optical connector includes a pair of the ferrules each having a flange, the coated fiber and a metal pipe molded integrally with one another by using molding resin, a coupling pin fitted through holes of the ferrules, a sleeve for receiving the metal pipes of the ferrules, and a housing member for axially clamping the ferrules to each other.

A submarine optical fiber cable includes inner and outer dams at suitable intervals for limiting water flow in the cable. The outer dams are formed in a space between inner and outer metal tubes of a pressure resisting sheath of the cable, and the inner dams are formed in the inner tube in which an optical fiber unit is enclosed. Each dam is made of a sticky compound or a jelly of plastics resin which is loaded at the dam position. The cable is also provided with a scale which represents distance from one end of the cable.
