A system and method for monitoring adaptive streaming content with selectable alert sensitivity modes and playlist alerting functionality are provided. The method includes downloading manifest files and segments of adaptive streaming content using a computer server. Alerts are generated based on different sensitivity modes for rebuffering events and stream outages. The system provides for stream outage alerting functionality and allows users to choose between the most sensitive mode, normal sensitivity mode, and the least sensitive mode to receive appropriate alerts.
